Expanding Easel power?

Post by seanbonner » Mon Sep 14, 2020 3:48 pm

I have a BEMI easel and just bought two modules from 1979 that I was hoping to swap in for the keyboard like this:

Unfortunately, upon removing the keyboard I found there's only one connection to power a single module, so I'm trying to figure out how to expand that and haven't had any luck with any of the companies I've emailed asking about it. Does anyone know if there's a power splitter or multiplier or something board that I can pop in there?

Portabellabz mini distribution board would do it, with a little work to add a connector.

Oh, this looks promising. Do you know where to get the connector you mention?

Sorry, what's a 211? Looks like you did what I want to do, so definitely interested in your solution here...

The female connector is a 10 (or 2 x 10) pin edge connector with 3.96mm pitch, can be found on ebay or Mouser part 587-306-50-010.
The Mini Distro Board is an easy solution as long as your Easel's PSU is able of enough power, early BEMI units have a weak PSU, more details in viewtopic.php?f=19&t=237481
If the PSU is weak, you can add a second one to power the Mini Distro Board, adapting what I explain in the "Early BEMI Easel with weak PSU upgrade" section of the VCS3 Card's build notes http://www.portabellabz.be/images/vcs3/ ... _notes.pdf

I'm not a synths dealer and I'm not aware of an inexpensive Synthi secret market, please don't ask me if I know one for sale.

You could also get in touch with Buchla. They sell a distro board with all cabling etc, and it is a pretty easy install. I purchased it as part of an Easel Expansion Kit which includes the LEM218 boat, the LEM218 power source, the Euro input jack internal cable, the Easel distro board, and the ribbon that connects that distro board to the ribbon port on the bottom of the Easel power source. I would guess that they could sell you just the distro-board though, if you do not need the 218LEM boat. As far as I remember, the distro-board also have h-connectors as well as the regular 200 connector. It powers the 208 + 4 modules without issues. My Easel is a 2016 model.

I found a photo of the Buchla distro board, taken after install. The ribbon cable is mounted under the Easel power board, and it needs to be taken out for connecting the ribbon. I do not think this board can be installed in early BEMI Easels though.

I did reach out to Buchla as well as several of their dealers but no one replied so I was at a bit of a loss. Luckily ArcDevils saw this thread and it looks like he's selling exactly the part I needed due to an upgrade on his end, so I just picked that up from him and expect it should all work well soon. Very much appreciate everyone's feedback here, really helpful!!
