Tutorials for Serge Eurorack

Post by Niggum Naugrim » Sun Mar 15, 2020 12:46 am

Hello All,
I just purchased 7 RS Eurorack modules (VSF, VQF, Ring, NTO, Resonant EQ. Triple+ Waveshaper, S/S Generator) and I already have Maths. Where are the best places to go to get tutorials and manuals for them? I've only gotten into Eurorack in the last 4 months or so, but decided Serge had the most "Electric" sound. So - any advice would be appreciated. Also, I plan on getting the Wave Multiplier next, and I have a good mixer - what else would you recommend as a "must have"? And is Maths sufficient?
Thanks,
Niggum

There are so many posts about the different Serge modules that I'm afraid (and sorry) I'd not know where to start.
But maybe you could edit the title (with a typo) of your thread from "Tutoirals for Serge Eurorack" to "Tutorials for Serge Eurorack", so other wigglers can find it later on while using the search engine.

Okay. If I think about advices or tipps about Serge modules I think for instance of Todd Barton (vgermuse) and Doug Lynner.
Looking for its username that I don't remember while I'm writing this I found this thread which might be helpful:

Here a quote which might help with the SSG for instance:

This video by Doug Lynner does an excellent job of explaining and demonstrating patch programming. At 1:14 he breaks down what makes the Serge approach special.

If you search for "Serge tutorials", you'll find what you're looking for IMHO.

Or even references to youtube channels about the subject, like Doug's yt channel. For sure a great help for what you're asking:

haha Thanks for the shoutout-- I'll take all the attention I can get :hihi:

There are some excellent Serge players out there (especially Batchas who has a huge YouTube channel)-- probably anything you can discover on the internet can be useful.

If there's something particular you want to know how to do, I'll show you some patches. Eurorack Serge is exactly the same circuits in 4U. The panels have some convenience functions like cycle switches but you can patch without them and it will work like in a 4U serge video.

Most of the modules you mention are pretty simple and you can best learn by simply diving in and playing with them.
The exception is the SSG - this can take a long time to properly understand. I found the following very useful for that: https://sergemodularinfo.blogspot.com/p/ssg-hijinx.html

I found the triple waveshaper a little harder to get usable results from (when compared with the VCM) but playing with it is the answer and I am finding it more and more useful over time.

Don't forget you can 'ping' the VCFQ. That's what it's well known for. Just hit it with a trigger and play with the Frequency and Q.

If that's all the modules you have then you'll only have one VCA (top section of the VCM), though you can use the RING with an inverted signal. This may or may not be an issue for you. I use Intellijel uVCAs because they expect 5v triggers, which matches the serge circuits.

The DUSG is way better for audio than MN Maths by the way - so later on you might want one of those.

NTO sounds lovely when Frequency Modulated. Note that the variable wave has some annoying volume changes through its range.

You simply must put the RESEQ into feedback mode (with the little switch). This is where a lot of magic awaits - but watch your ears if you are wearing headphones!

Following on from that, feedback is a big part of the Serge sound. Try feeding back outputs back into inputs (great on the VCM).

Have fun!
