linear power supply location - distance from modules?

Post by levelhead3 » Wed Mar 25, 2020 12:56 am

I had a simple question as to whether there was a recommended distance for linear power supply location, prompted by the fact that I'm about to redo my power supply-to-boat cables and was wondering about cable lengths.

On one hand, general common sense says to keep big transformers as far away from the modules as possible.

On the other hand, a lot of power supply/distribution threads talk about keeping especially the common leads as short as possible.

So for a typical Serge-style boat setup, would it be better to use short cables and keep the power supplies on the table top right behind the boats (2-3' cables), or use longer cables and place the power supplies down on the floor (5-6' cables)?

Unless you have a remote sensing PSU, keep the cables <1ft.

Common sense says prove that you have a problem before you try to solve it.

Try working out how much cable you will need to get the resistance below 10 milliohms for a 2ft length and then a 6ft length...

To clarify, I'm not trying to solve any specific problem.

I was really just asking whether it would be wiser to place the power supply adjacent to the boats on the table top or the floor. And I'm only posing the question because I need to make new cables.

The advantages for each option I mentioned previously were assumed, and may or may not be relevant given the somewhat insignificant difference in distances. So maybe it really doesn't matter.

The minimum distance for the top boat will be greater than 1' regardless, unless I somehow suspend the power supply right behind the boats.

I'm in the short cables school of thought. Mine are 2 feet.
