Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
My synthi was making a weird noise. Ironic. Like a white crackling sound. I thought it was busted. I realized it was my router. Synthi in ring mod mode seems to be sensitive to electromagnetic fields

This also seems to work with CV. Reversing the trapezoid, Osc 3papz wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2020 2:03 amTo invert a signal patch a pin to the meter column and patch the scope output to a hi level input with a jack cable, the inverted signal is then available on the corresponding input channel row and you can patch it together with the filter output to the output channel.

Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
wonder how they'd offer Synthi A's since the Spartanite case is long obsolete and stock has cleared
Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
BYO Spartanite. That's what I'm doing.

I wrote him and Robin said provide your own spartanite or be good with just receiving the chassis.

Originals are still around with a bit of luck and persistence. As mentioned further back, I found my Spartanite on Gumtree for $100. Fortunately it was misspelt as Spartinite.Portabella wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2020 10:47 amsorry I don't have a spare fifty-grand to spend on a mold

He said it was 4+ yrs and that the VCS list was a bit longer.

Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
Synthis are still being made and sold... I received my Synthi Cornwall today. Wait time was approx 3 years to get from #19 to #1.
I supplied my own Spartanite case.
Full mods - it's a beauty!

Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
That's great news! I'm currently #11 with BYO Spartanite. Sounds like the estimate Robin gave was pretty accurate. Enjoy!

That is a fair estimate.Portabella wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2020 10:47 amsorry I don't have a spare fifty-grand to spend on a mold
I would plant my new Synthi in wood or aluminum.

Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
Who said I had a spare fifty-grand? I feel like I've said this before but I found mine on Gumtree for $100. If one didn't know the value of these cases, they look pretty shonky and surely must turn up in junk sales etc. with the combination of persistence and luck. I feel like the person selling mine thought she'd found a real sucker to buy an old plastic suitcase for $100.MindMachine wrote: ↑Sat Sep 19, 2020 10:37 pmThat is a fair estimate.Portabella wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2020 10:47 amsorry I don't have a spare fifty-grand to spend on a mold

Otherwise I was definitely looking into a custom wooden case option.
Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
It doesn't take a fifty-grand mold to make a spartanite case clone. What it *does* take is someone willing to have their spartanite case measured, And a cast taken from it. Which will require at least some disassembly. if someone would put their cheaply purchased "find" up for this use, everyone else could benefit.
Casting, blow molding, thernoforming are all realistic potential alternatives to a big expensive $50Kinjection mold. Which one would work best requires having a donor case. That's all it would take.
Of course this ignores that many wouldn't want the literal "clone" case. Because it somehow isn't as real in some sense.
edit: I'm looking forward to seeing how Behringer dealt with this. They've already shown the pin matrix, and Rob Keeble's hint of a UK team finishing a classic synth with diode filter suggests it won't be long now. <-- NOT wanting any Behringer discussion in this thread. Only pointing out that 'someone'-Behringer may have already cloned the Spartanite case.

Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
I'm sure I read a discussion on a forum (might have been here) on the feasibility of a small production run of Spartanite clones. I can't remember the conclusion but it probably needed a lot of organisation, up front costs and a donor case. Even if there was a way to do it, I can understand why Robin Wood won't as the demand is not great and the setup too much work for EMS's current artisan business. Similarly, I would have thought that PIN would have placed the Potabella in a plastic case if possible, but they use a metal one.
To be honest- I'd be happy enough to have a Cornwall in a nice wooden frame and just wait for an old case. The Spartanites are a period piece - the plastic is robust enough, but not exactly high quality. It's what's inside that counts but I get it that people want the whole look.
My understanding of the B clone is that it's a VCS 3 and not a Synthi A...

Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
i'd be up for a clone
Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
If someone was serious, I'm happy to try and provide any measurements required, though I'm pretty sure they've been provided in previous threads.
I would feel uncomfortable about disassembly or sending it off though.

Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
Is there not a close Zero Halliburton case that could be used? If I'm not mistaken, you can pay them to make a custom case, albeit, the custom job is very expensive.
Re: EMS Synthi waiting list
Yes. But most people want the case, not a case. The size, shape, look, feel of the original. Once you move past that, and accept something different, there many options.
