Drew Schlesinger & David Torn: Summer Synthesis 1978

Post by drewskee » Wed Feb 12, 2020 9:49 pm

- My first formal release came out on Friday which was recorded in my small 4-track apartment studio in 1978, almost 42 years ago.
- It's all electronic and was done with David Torn using an ARP Avatar guitar synthesizer.
- Seems it may be one of the only albums featuring that device and he got it to track really well.
- Synths and keyboards included a Micromoog, Oberheim Expander Module & 8-Step Sequencer, Gibson Organ and Fender Rhodes
- Effects included a Mutron B-Phase, A/DA and Systech Flangers, Furman Spring Reverb and a lot of tape echo

It's available on Bandcamp here: https://drewschlesinger-davidtorn.bandcamp.com/releases
Here's a review in Synth and Software by Geary Yelton: https://synthandsoftware.com/2020/02/gr ... unearthed/

Think some of those here might like it...thanks.

/Drew

Fantastic, great work!
I thought I would build a few modules to see if I liked it and guess what happened......

I've only had time for a quick skim listen, but goodness me, this sounds fabulous. Can't wait to give it a proper listen :tu:

Thank you for the nice comments, they are truly most appreciated! FWIW I just lowered the price to $6 for a download and $10 for the CD.

I've given the album a couple of serious listens now and it really is fantastic, top tier stuff, as good as anything available in this vein imo. Bravo. Have you got any other unknown synth masterpieces lurking in your archives??? ;)

Thank you...that is most kind! I have another album on my own from 1993 that will come out later this year I hope. I also have experimental electronic pieces done with my small 2 panel Serge Modular over the last 8-10 years that I'd like to release.

This specific album was really early all analog without any sequencers etc. Here's a photo of the studio, me, and David Torn back in 1978...just as an FYI.

Great photos, thanks for sharing those. I'll be interested to hear those other recordings too, when they get released :tu:
