Looking for crappy music
Maybe a clickbait title, but coming from a recording engineering background, I've gotten so incredibly bored with things being done "the right way" tone wise that I'm really craving records that have bad production, or go in alternative / experimental routes with it. I want to hear things that don't compress properly, don't balance between bass and treble, have bad stereo fields, you name it. I want to hear things recorded through a packard bell microphone propped up in a tennis shoe.
"Ah yeah, you’ve got that strange blend of apathy and self-flagellation that somehow gets you where you want to go."
Re: Looking for crappy music
Check out my latest offering, linked in the signature. I think you'll find it properly crappy, haha.
LPs released January 2021 - Screen Phoenix - Ethiopian Scared Mechanical & Laserost - Oppussingsokkultister
Soundcloud // Eurorack module demos // MarsMelons - label // Video synth stuff

Re: Looking for crappy music
Not my creation, but check out "the is of being" by gemini eye, one of my all time faves. (Would love if someone knew of something similar!) I'm super sad their newest offering was more hi-fi.
Very fun production on this one, IMHO. Especially the lagrange points track at one point diverts into having separate songs on left and right channel but with the same chords/tempo/themes.

A record that does sound crappy in a really good way is the first Actress record. Hazyville. It's got a very odd sound to it.

Quick scroll through the ol' Ipod...
Angry Norwegian
Marion Barry
Kusari Gama Kill
Noisebazooka
Rank Sinatra
Video Nasty
Yokozuna-Bot
Mostly harsh noise stuff, but Angry Norwegian is just....I can't even describe how bad they are.....if you check out Yokozuna-Bot, please be careful of volume levels, they have some of the loudest mastering I have come across, makes me quite jealous actually...

It dawned on me that for easier searching for the bands I listed, they can all be found on Grindcore Karaoke

I think I made this on a app on my phone
I wanted it to sound like “ ESP it’s you “
I filtered the HH and just went for it.

Re: Looking for crappy music
Thanks everyone, really great stuff. Experimentalism is about more than just composition, eh? This explains why I am a misunderstood genius.

Re: Looking for crappy music
Hell yeah. Tuning Circuits. That was one of the first things that came to mind. One of my favorite albums ever.
Some more crappy music, according to the terminology of this thread, that I like:
Brainbombs
Ildjarn
Wold
90s Memphis rap in general

So damn good; all of it. My contribution:

Re: Looking for crappy music
Not crappy by any stretch - but definitely creatively mixed.
Love this track - absolutely detonates heads on a big system:)

Re: Looking for crappy music
That's a banging track. Those blown out sections are such a cool idea.
Another artist whose rougher tracks might fit this thread:
Christoph de Babalon
De gustibus non est disputandum
Re: Looking for crappy music
De Babalon was so far ahead of the curve, it's a shame he was never better known.
Don't believe the hype.

Absolutely. If You're Into It, I'm Out of It is untouchable. Almost everyone I show it to recognizes it as something great.

Re: Looking for crappy music
Hype Williams (the band), black dice, matrix metals. This guy nacho marty on YouTube does some great synth demo tracks that have an ineffable lo fi mystique I find really compelling. Hmm. I'll try to think of more

I'm digitizing a bunch of cassettes I recorded 20 years ago, of songs I wrote and piano-rolled in a Cakewalk demo, played by PC Soundblaster GM sounds, recorded with a Walkman through Logitech speakers. You can have them all.

Re: Looking for crappy music
Not sure if it's bad - guerilla collage music - you'll need to listen to at least 20 minutes to get an idea of the territory it covers - and it's coming up to 50 years old.

Re: Looking for crappy music
Hype Williams (Dean Blunt / Inga Copeland) for sure. It always sounds so crappily good. I found this from a 2012 interview with Dean and Inga:
He also boxed at York Hall in Bethnal Green in east London. "Losing boxing matches, that was my income. You get paid to lose in wrestling, and it's no different in East End boxing. I got knocked the fuck out many a time. Blame boxing – that's why shit sounds the way it does."

Re: Looking for crappy music
An example of lofi production that really works in the band’s favor would be brainbombs.
Re: Looking for crappy music
The vinyl debut by Der Plan was allegedly recorded using a dictating machine. Hence rather crappy quality, yet, the best piece of work this outfit has ever done IMO:
Le Voyage: D'Après Le Livre Des Morts Tibétain by Pierre Henry is astonishingly lo-fi given that he already was a known contemporary composer back then (1968).
