Psy Trance Track (Hermetech Master)

Post by Babaluma » Thu Oct 18, 2012 3:47 pm

There's a high quality free download of a recent Psy Trance master I made for Equilizyme & Transiant, the track is called "Aloaceae". You can grab it from my web site Examples page here:

http://hermetechmastering.com/examples.html

It has a greater dynamic range than the current "standard" for this genre, and sounds all the better for it! Available for free download as a 24 bit, 44.1kHz, 90MB FLAC file. No digital clipping or limiting was used on this track.

The artist's Soundcloud page can be found here:

All comments welcome!

DLing!
i am also fed up with the over compression present in my favorite dance genre, and have been adjusting my personal mastering technique based on more traditional ideas of dynamics, punch, etc.
curious to hear this-- are you implying that all the mastering compression was done in the analog domain? By no limiter do you mean you didn't touch the limiter, or you literally didn't run a limiter plug in?

damn,
that is an exceedingly perfect master.
good work gregg... super shiny clean punchy AND warm bassy all at once.
doesn't get too much better than that.
loudness was pretty good-- i played it the same level as what i used to master stuff yesterday, and it easily compared or exceeded in terms of perceived loudness.
i played it w/ "Vox" and metered it (parallel) with Span... it looked good.

hey dave,

thanks for downloading and commenting! yes, i'm VERY happy with the sound of this one. :)

to answer your questions, it was already mixed very similar to the way that i'm presuming you mix (from having worked on a couple of your mixes), i.e. lots of automation and compression or limiting on individual tracks to ensure that the level is already extremely consistent from section to section, with no crazy large spikes. in that sense, the mix is already somewhat "flat" looking (but not sounding!) in a stereo editor's waveform display, which means that the RMS can already be pretty high, and just increasing the gain can bring it right up in loudness without any clipping or limiting needed.

it was a GREAT mix to start with, so with this track i used no more than 1.5dB of analogue compression for a little vibe and pump, a little sweetening EQ, and then hit the ADC as hard as i could without clipping. it went into the elephant limiter with the output celilng set to -0.2dB, gain set to 0.0, and oversampling switched to off. this meant NO limiting or oversampling was applied, but the ceiling also ensured that there were no ISPs (inter sample peaks). i consider it "hi-fi" psy trance. ;) it's similar in loudness to some of the mid 90's dragonfly and TIP stuff.

you may not like the style, but i'd hope you'd appreciate the clarity and punch in the mix/master. i think the AES average RMS for the whole track is about -9 RMS, with loudest sections at around -8 RMS (yes, still quite high, but remember, NO CLIPPING OR LIMITING, and you should hear the damage done to some other tracks in this genre currently, with RMS of around -4...)

anyway, i posted this track on places like isratrance and psymusic uk, and i just get garbled nonsense and hostility in return. they seem to be peopled by, shall we say, somewhat less eloquent members. this is why i love muff's so!

P.S. I did do a LOUD version too (at the artist's request, although they preferred the "hi-fi" one), you can download that one on their SoundCloud page. It's the same but I think I added 2dB of limiter gain. I can check the exact settings (analogue and digital) for both versions in my notes if you are interested, but I wouldn't want anyone to take the LOUD version as an example of my usual work.

I took all the demos down off my site as I didn't feel they really represented me. You're only as good as your last master! Also, I feel I have a big enough client base/body of work/Discogs list/word of mouth reputation etc., not to have to offer any demos these days.
