Corsynth DR-03

Post by steffengrondahl » Sun Jun 07, 2020 7:52 am

2 years ago Cosynth announced they would make a full set of drum modules. In 2018 we got the DR-01 Bass Drum, in 2019 the DR-02 Snare Drum and now it seems like Corsynth are going to release the third module in the series - the much appreciated DR-03 Hihat/Metal:
https://corsynth.com/home/modules/dr03

Soundclips are up, no price yet. Sound great. Looking forward to purchase it when it gets available

PS: As some of you might remember, the DR-03 was the subject for the first video in the "Post your NEW Audio and Videos here",

Thanks for the post Steffen! :) .
It took me a bit longer than I would have wanted but it's finally happening. The module was ready months ago but with the Covid situation I decided to delay its release.
Panels and PCBs have been ordered and they should arrive in a couple of weeks so the module should be released by the end of the month. The final price is not calculated yet but probably it will be a bit more expensive than the DR-02 because it has more jacks, switches, leds... I still need to do the calculations.

This is how the module looks like :

Thorsday , here you have a playlist with some audio demos. All sounds come from the DR-03 except for bass and snare drums. Only delay and reverb has been added. The filter sweeps that can be heard in these demos are from the DR-03 with external modulation ( LFO, enve etc )

This is the best designed Hi Hats module I've ever heard. Awesome control features. I'm looking forward to this.

I would like to hear a demo of it by itself. I get confused with the additional modules even though they all sound great.

Thanks Kindredlost , I'm happy that you like it. I've tried to make it as versatile as possible and to give the user the control to design it's own sound. About the demos some of them are just the DR-03 and the others have "soloed" the DR-03 part at the end of the demo. In general the only sounds that are not coming from the DR-03 are the bass drum and snare. The only effects that I've used are reverb and delay and even those without any special filtering that can change the essence of the sounds. Here you have a detailed explanation of each demo.

DR-03 Demo 01 : From 18s you can hear only the DR-03 , the filter sweep is the Metal sound with an external LFO that modulates the BPF.

DR-03 Demo 02 : From 29s you can hear only the DR-03. The hihat BPF is modulated by an external LFO. The Metal sound appears at the beginning of each bar and it has the BPF modulated by a LFO for vibrato.

DR-03 Demo 03 : Except for the bass drum and snare it's just the DR-03, basic sounds without external modulation. From

DR-03 Demo 04 : From 34s you can hear only the DR-03. First just the closed Hihat, later appears the open Hihat and finally the Metal sound. The hihat BPF is modulated in audio frequency to create the Lo-Fi effect. The Metal sound has the BPF modulated by a LFO.

DR-03 Demo 05 : It's just the DR-03, long reverb and Hi-Hat BPF and Metal BPF are modulated by slow LFOs

DR-03 Demo 06 : Except for the bass drum and snare all is the DR-03. Basic sounds without external modulation. From 26s you can hear just the DR-03

DR-03 Demo 07 : It's just the DR-03. Hi-hat closed played at quarter notes and the Open hihat in independnt mode played at 16th notes. The open Hi-hat decay is modulated by an external LFO. The Metal sound BPF is modulated by an external sample and hold.

DR-03 Demo 08 : It's just the DR-03 , a basic hi-hat sequence to show the three audio sources for the hi-hat sound.

Thank you Pablo for the details on each demo.

What was at first so confusing and is more understandable now is the variety of sounds coming from the module all at once.
Just stunning really.

I was thinking of buying more than one so I could use the variety of sounds together but your design has made that somewhat possible already. Of course two would be sublime and would still make sense but it's great to know there is such a sonic pallet initially.

I'm anxious to know when it is available and the price. Such a useful tool.

Yes the module itself can produce a lot of different sounds and when you play with the modulation inputs you can get really nice tone variations.
The metal part despite been simple, it's possible to use it even as a basic synth.
It will be available next Monday and some of them are already on their way to Noisebug.

If you are curious this is DR-03 Block Diagram.

I thought Pablo said a bit more than the DR-02....that would be over twice the price. Where did you come up with that number?

Total price for all 3 modules.
ahhhhhh wasn't thinking about the DR-01 and DR-02..... Yeah, they aren't cheap in comparison to drum boxes....but there is a hell of a lot of sonic territory that these modules can cover!

In general modular doesn't make sense if you think about the money . For the same amount of money that you will expend in just 3 vcos you could buy a polysynth :tu:

The way I look at it is -
Can I create something similar with a bunch of modules? - yes
Will I have even more control over the result? - yes
For what I do with drum sounds, does it make sense to invest the expense and space in the frames to do it? - no

So modules like this make a lot of sense for me.

That's more or less the reason that I've decided to create the DR series. Drum synthesis take a lot of resources and patching. If you take a look to the block diagram that I've posted, think about all the modules that you would need to create the same patch.

I have one and it is really flexible between the CH, OH and metal. Throw in the RM and noise basis of the synthesis and you have alot of really different timbres to choose from. I am waiting on the DR-02 to round out my 5u Drum section. (DR-01, DR-02, SSL Thundrum, DR-03)
