Stuffing the Dotcom 163 EuroRack Adapter?

Post by gregae » Sun Jan 03, 2021 2:35 pm

Wondering how the folks who have the new Q163 adapter plan to fill it. I picked up a pair of digital oscillators for mine: the Mutable Instruments ‘Plaits’ (AKA SSL’s ’Woven Spirits’ in 5u) and the 4ms ‘Ensemble Oscillator’ (no 5U equivalent). As these are the first digi-oscillators in my rig, I’m expecting a pretty different patching experience from the usual 5U wiggling (still figuring out how to fill out the rest of the cab):

Anyone else?

Note that the Plaits is available in MU format from a couple of sources (I have one, love it!) so if I had one of these Euro adapters I'd fill it only with stuff that is not available in MU format. Maybe stuff like a 4MS Spectral Multiband Resonator? Some weird granular stuff like an Instruo Arbhar?

That Ensemble Oscillator is quite the module. If I had to choose (I won't though. I have a separate Euro setup and like it that way), I'd wedge in one of those C4RBN filters from WMDevices. Can't find anything close in 5U or Frac or Buchla or....

I would put an Intellijel Metropolis in there, no doubt about it...

I really like the Metropolis and use it for complex stuff but I was more interested in the original Roland 100M 182 which the Metropolis was inspired by. It (Metropolis) is very deep in the menu diving aspects and is one if those modules you keep the manual within reach.

Behringer has a cheapo clone of the 182...

I'm more interested in the up-coming Dove sequencer. It is a similar style unit with a bunch of extra features that look really musically driven for manual playing.

sorry for the tangent, back to the subject...

TipTop Z-DSP or Livewire Chaos Computer are two things I wouldn't mind having in the middle of my 5u. Not sure how I'd "stuff" it out, though.

Rings + Clouds fits. If you bring euro to 5u you might as well bring the memes.

Mine would have a Morphagene if I hadn't finally succumb to the Tape and Microsound Music Machine...but I did and its been really awesome.

I'd put a few behringer moog clones.

35 HP, right?

8HP: Peaks with Dead Man's Catch installed, which'll give you a turing machine, about twenty different digital waveforms and envelopes.
8HP: Pot Action Recorder
4HP: An Evaton Technologies AModulator if you have a 5U RF Nomad

1HP: Irritating single space blank panel! Ya coulda made it 36, Rogah!

I'd then finish out the small rack with 7 DPLPGs or a mix of other 2HP modules.

Make sure your powering is heavy enough to support a couple of digital modules, which are more power hungry in general. 5U powering is designed for analog modules.

Excuse me not being nuanced today.

Noted and covered. I ordered a QPS6+ to go with the QFC22 folding cab and Q163 Euro Adapter. Should be plenty of power for the adapter (stuffed) plus 18 spaces for other 5U modules.

I’m filling mine with CV and clock modulator.
For now I have Pamela’s New Workout and Ornaments and Crime.
I was (and still am) worried about the signal level difference between the euro and the 5U, which is why I decided to just do CV source.
Do you have that problem with your modules?

Not really. At least, it's not worse than differences between 5U/MU manufacturers. Actually, I've never had problems mixing oscillators/filters. What sometimes requires attenuation/boosting are the CV and clock signals. But it's nothing that a couple of signal processors (like the dotcom Q125) can't solve.

What signal level difference are you referring to? It seems to me that Euro modules and MU modules have the same general ranges of signal levels for audio, CV, and gate/trigger. There are some modules that are exceptions but it doesn't seem to correlate to euro vs. MU.

The DC POWER voltage levels that are required to run the modules are different (12V vs. 15V), but not the various signals that are produced by the modules.

So if power is no consideration, I'd suggest putting a Xaoc Zadar (10HP) three Metasonix RK modules (24HP combined - RK7, RK6, RK3) and a single blank.
