5U builders at NAMM 2016

Post by arock » Sun Jan 10, 2016 8:56 pm

Just curious who is going to be at NAMM. This is going to be my first time attending, and it would be cool to get around and meet folks that will be there. I see Moon Modular has a booth (and of course Moog). Anyone else exhibiting? Any other folks just attending?

Yes, Hall C Booth 4906! :tu: I'm planning on being there to help out. 8-)

I was just wondering if Kazikie and COTK was going to attend again but I haven't seen an announcement so I'm guessing not?

I'll be there all four days. I'll have a pretty busy business schedule (I do consulting work for audio equipment manufacturers and I'll be visiting with clients) but I should still have time to schmooze a bit and hang out with some wigglers.

I always wondered is namm only for press/manufacturer and those in the biz? Do people sell wares there too? So many people from overseas come there and I'm always hoping to buy items when they are around haha.

I went there once, and it's a loud and noisy trade show. Sure, there's all the new stuff everyone's coming out with. And all the famous people walking around. But you really aren't going to have much fun there as a user/consumer, since you really can't sit down and play and HEAR the stuff properly. Some manufacturers sell their demo models at the end of the show, but that's about it as far as product sales (besides perhaps wholesale orders) go.

But if you ever have the opportunity to go, for whatever reason, might as well experience it...

While STG and Moon look to be the only 5U manufacturers that will be in that immediate area, there is so much other cool modular (eurorack) and keyboards etc within a weak stone's throw that you could easily spend an entire day just in that one little corner of the convention!

And COTK was there last year, borrowing some booth space from Avalon, with an absolutely massive 5U system. It was enroute to be delivered to a lucky (and wealthy, apparently) customer shortly after the show, so that unit won't be making a repeat appearance at NAMM this year.

I'm not exhibiting this year, sadly, but I am still considering making an appearance on Saturday... Be nice to see everyone's friendly faces.

I'm feeling more and more like 5U is to Betamax as Euro is to VHS.

Still sticking by my signature, though.

No, it's true. Last year, Moog Modulars were the craze but nobody could afford them. This year, I'm not even sure that Moog has a booth, if they do, it's probably empty. (shame, they blew their wad on the early release of the Mother 32 which is... um, yeah, Euro as you said).

Soooooo many new Euro products. The Pitts keyboard'ish thing looks interesting not that I'd buy one, old man Tom Oberheim is also going Euro; they look great actually and he is alluding to a 4 voice (or more) controller soon.

I'm happy with what I have and I'm sure lots of you are too but the 5U builder community is more like a club than a community. We all know each other but builders around here will struggle to make 20 units of something and buyers will wait 6 mos or longer.

But check out that Waldorf Euro thing; it's really incredible, thinking out of the box.

There I go again, excitement which is not happening in MU. Moon and the other guys are still releasing great stuff but I guess it's just not mainstream. Somewhat sad. I'm pretty sure you guys have CD collections at home and still 'do' media. Notice I didn't say record/LP collections. That's new again. Maybe our stuff will be new again someday also. But Euro has to have 10x the market maybe 50x.

Apparently Moog's booth is chock full of Mother32 setups paired with other assorted gear of theirs. And cactii.

Much as I love the MU format, man is the appeal (and insane variety) of Eurorack a rather potent black hole trying to drag one in...

Why the long faces? MU is a legacy format with staying power built on enduring 50 year old designs. Thanks to DotCom and the others it is a classic instrument here to stay. There are custom conversions of Euro, Haibles and STG, STS, Oakley, AC, FSFX, Moon, COTK and other designers that have moved it forward. I just sold off my third small Eurorack system. Its does not begin to touch my wonderful Moog and Buchla format setups for integrated design and sound.
