Short run of DIY MU panels - 2020 UPDATE!

Post by GiliRose » Fri Jan 27, 2017 1:12 pm

January 11 2020 UPDATE
Well, this has been a looooooooooooooooooooong wait.

I finally managed to find a local supplier for etching my panel faces.
Seeing a "dotcom style" design appear on the black faceplate, etched as by magic with a laser beam
was wondrous and gratifying on so many levels. I still have some file setup issues to adjust but I am out of the woods!

As I now have full control of the artwork, I have managed to fine tune the appearance of the engraving.
More pics soon as I move along :-)

Greetings,
I am kicking off a limited run of MU format panels made for a Yusynth/CGS/ MFOS oriented DIY modular + Custom design MU layouts.
The panels are professionally manufactured using MIL-Spec materials, and geared for fast turnaround and design flexibility.

While I'm at it, I hope to make available the option to join in for a humble markup fee-
so anyone looking to save a few $$ on some decent looking 1U, 2U and 4U panels - let me know.

Here is a quick preview as this is the 1st Proof-of-Concept, but I can say it looks darn professional right up next to my other gear.

When considering, please keep in mind the following:
- Current batch is 1U, 2U and 4U pieces but future may add more options
- You will have to drill your own holes
- I can customize layouts if you have anything in mind

16 of May, 2017, Edit:
PayPal adds a slight fee to payments, as there is no "Personal/Friend" payment method available here.
Please PM me for the actual price as this is dependent on the country of payment.

Currently available is the "BAREBONES" Metal shop option for hardcore DIY!
These are bare-blank aluminum panels, no paint, no nothing, clean slates at bare minimum costs
that you can use to do quick trial builds, cost effective rigging or creative Ray Wilson style panel design.

These are going at rock-bottom costs and available till the stock runs out!
If interested post the the specific designs you are interested in AND send me a PM too.

16 of May, 2017, Bummer update:
The shop scheduled to do the faceplate prints did a 180 on me and upped
the agreed-to cost to an amount I am not willing to pay.
Hey, the whole point was to reach an economic option, wasn't it? :bang:

I am right now working on a solution which I hope prove beneficial for all, and apologize for any delays

26 of May, 2017, Edit:
New faceplate solution on the way! :sb: :sb: :sb:

(End of Edit)

.. just finished my revision of the needed ACX Synth MIDI2CV ...
I pre-arranged a nice set of component technical drawings
so it is rather easy to whip up panel design or re-design as needed.

I will later start a list of "Finished" designs that will be heading to the shop
soon. If there is anything special you are in need of, let me know
or PM me.

Cheers

I'm interested in the following:
2x Yusynth VCO
2x Yusynth Envelope Generator
1x Yusynth Wavefolder
1x Yusynth VCA
1x Yusynth Steiner Parker Filter
1x Yusynth Mixer
and maybe an AXC polyphonic cv-midi, maybe.
Also a MFOS 10-step sequencer, though it would probably be more the 2 MU, just mentioning!

I'm only interested if the price will be a lot less the par say, FSFX though. I've also seen silk-screened panels in the past where the ink would chip off a bit too easily, how are these fare in those terms?

@ Huba-Swift
that is very exciting!!!

OK - I can see that I will have to put some order into things for the future.
As far as panels larger than 2U - that will have to be on hold for a while, but I will check with the person
doing the aluminum work what this entails, as these tend to be on the rare side of things.
But hell yeah - We all need a sequencer panel or two (or three), don't we?

MFOS: Can you point me to the specific sequencer you have in mind?

Now, Yves has a number of Mixer modules, so until I set up a proper
index, can you be more specific which one you had in mind?
- 1U simple 3 ch. Mixer
- 2U 4 ch. AC-DC Mixer
- 4U 4 ch. Output Mixer and VC Panner

On to the to the finer points:
The panels are constructed from two parts
A. A bare aluminum MU format panel batch milled to 1U and 2U
B. A Mil-Spec laser engraved "Face Plate"
The face plate is then laminated to the backing panel and the two bond very nicely to make a high grade and professional looking result.

There is a sub-milimeter level shift along the edge of the panels where
the aluminum is exposed, which I find aesthetically pleasing.
I doubt very much the panels will ever chip or fade, as the same material is used to designate ballistic missiles and combat gear.
The adhesive holding aluminum-to-aluminum is also a very high grade 3M Mil-Spec product.

Fonts: As I am not eagle-eyed at my age, I changed all fonts to BOLD
so they stand out better for me to see. You can compare the typeface with the dotcom to see the difference.
If you would rather have the regular Arial typeface - let me know.

Still, I would not go around bashing up my panels to see if they would last, and I wouldn't do that to my strat either :-)

FSFX, Re:Synthesis and others make VERY nice panels, using laser to engrave the black anodized panel, or silk screen white two part epoxy
on a powder baked panel - which gives a different type of result.
They also provide the panels punched and CNCd - which these aren't - to save on cost.

I can say that the face is silky smooth and the black tone sits very well alongside the black tone of dotcom panels.

Please be patient regarding price, creating these isn't cheap but I am aiming to have them on the "Economy" side of things.
I hope I'll be able to update regarding price withing a few days.

Can you point me to the specific sequencer you have in mind?
It's my own design, I'll send you a photo as soon as I can. It doesn't have to be exact, just the same idea.

The simple 3 channel mixer.
If you would rather have the regular Arial typeface - let me know.
Whatever most closely resembles synthesizers.com panels would be best.

Yusynth simple 3 ch. mixer - No Problem :-)

Dotcom typeface for knob designations is regular Arial 12 point,
no problem either.

I'm curious as to your sequencer, sent us a pic when your ready!

Quick Fix for Sequencer Panel

It will take a while until I get into the actual aluminum punching part,
but if you are in a rush or need a faster solution for the sequencer panel,
you can order a 4U blank from Roger Arrick.

I will be able to whip up the face plate on a much shorter notice
and send it to you to do the mounting yourself.
It should be a perfect fit.

In any case I will do a quick mockup of the panel as soon as I can
so you can do a paper print in Canada and see if it fits.

I'm fine waiting if it's cheaper/easier for you. I'm redoing my whole studio so I probably won't have the time to wire these panels for a bit anyways.

8-) :hyper: 8-) :hyper: 8-)
Due to the near endless options and variations for
panels, and the requirements to not overstep any possible
design copyrights (where possibly applicable) -

It would be handy to be more specific if you have any one module in mind

Any update on this? I'm still interested in the panels. You don't have to worry about the sequencer panel if it's a hindrance. Either way is okay.

Hi Huba-Swift et all,
We have some family stuff going on here during February and a pressing
"real-life" deadline following up right after, but this will be happening.

The main step is getting the Aluminum panels machined, which I will
have to do in bulk, AKA goodby lots of cash in a very fast moment :-)

I really hope to get that done in a few weeks, after which doing the
actual "face-plates" is much easier and quicker.

I am also trying to help out a fellow wiggler looking into MU-Paneling
the new version of the ACX Synth MIDI-2-CV "Ultimate" version.
I just got some info from Alain Couple just the other day so hey,
progress is slow but is happening.

10-Step MFOS Sequencer mock-up

Post by GiliRose » Sun Feb 12, 2017 3:10 am

I just created a first rough mock-up for the MFOS 10-step sequencer panel.
I will send it to you via a PM so you can print and forward any remarks.
Lets keep all the technical stuff for the PM, no need to overload this thread
:-)

PS:
Can you give me the diameter for the "Circle Knobs" you want to use?
I am assuming they are close to 20mm, but want to be sure.
Also - I took some liberty in re-arranging the lower part of
the panel, so that would definitely need your input.

Hi Colorbars,

As there is SUCH a variety, it would be best to be specific :-)

Once I know the exact requirement or panel you need, I will be able to check it out
and get back to you with the details.

This is just my personal build, and will personally be doing Yusynth panels
for myself in the near future, but - if there is anything specific, it is quite
easy for me to have it arranged for production and do custom stuff to.

Hi Prosperity -

Sure - these ARE MU format panels, and the fold is part of what gives em that "thang" :-)

I will post pics as soon as these get here, for now just imagine
you take a dotcom panel and sand off all the black paint.
(And make the mounting holes go away).
This is as "raw" as I could make them.
