5u nasty filters?

Post by eboats » Thu Nov 21, 2019 8:36 pm

What are your favorite screaming nasty filters in 5u? Mild smooth filters need not apply.

think I understand this but trying to expand my 5U knowledge.

Do you mean you Audiorate FM the cut off frequency?

or feed them with FMed audio?

and by AM, do you audio rate into VCA-CV downstream of filter?

:hmm:

- Q107 with hard clipping (soft clip jumper taken off). Just in case you don't know, Q107s (and other "essential" dotcom modules) have a 15% discount this week.

- Synthetic Sound Labs Model 1021 Steiner Filter. I have not used it, but according to the description on the website: "if you really crank the RESONANCE up, you can make all that warmth go out the window because at or near oscillation, the 1021 starts to squeal and complain like a school girl tantrum."

- I don't know the acVOKS but I have a Polivoks VCF clone made by Roman Filippov and it's quite nasty. One could say it has two modes: bypass and screaming.

Used modules get sold off fairly regularly.

I would also say Q107 and the Croglin can get pretty gnarly.

The motm 485 I have messes things up pretty well. I particularly like the weird artifacts I get from HP mode.

Just got a second Q107 (the single-space "A" version) so I can have one set to hard clip and the other set to soft clip. It's also nice to have another filter with high-pass output.

In my rig, my favorite filters for nasty grunge are:

1. Ian Fritz - Threeler
2. CGS - CGS35 Steiner
3. MOTM - 420 (MS20 clone)

HP mode terrifies me, I never touch that.

But yeah, it's not a very clean filter to begin with, and a normal non-attenuated oscillator will overdrive it. Gets nicely gritty.

The MOTM-420 can get insanely nasty, especially when overdriven. I put together a few samples a while ago that’ll give you an idea of dirty it’ll get. The first is a UEG sequence through the MOTM-120, and the others are progressively wilder LPF and HPF settings

Just built a journeyman v2 and it is certified nasty.

Think it’s safe to bet that my my incoming AC Gristleizer will be nasty as fukk.
