i'm just gonna comment cause you know, comment.

SynthCube opened a retail store in MA that has 5U...

That's something...
Huh. That is both neat and a win for large format. Without knowing that or conducting any interwebz research, I will guesstimate their location is in Kendall Square (spent most of my life around Boston).

It's actually out in Bedford. That is where they live and as you can imagine, commercial real estate is FAR cheaper there...

Bump in the name of 5U activity.

I was hit with an epiphany: how plausible is the theory that I would guess 5U fondlers are generally older in age than Eurohack twiddlers, therefore less tethered to the internet?

Opinions.

I agree with the older part, but not about the tethered to the internet part.

I think that there is less product, lower number of manufacturers, and less direct manufacturer posts, which all lead to a lower number of posts and topics.
For Sale/Trade: 14U 84 hp Euro case . Willing to trade towards MU Modules, Moogerfooger pedals, Minifooger pedals, and other interesting effects boxes that work well with modular, try me!

Agreed, but there are definitely more MU manufacturers entering the market these days. A good thing - in moderation. Too much - without thought of the rest of the manufacturers can dilute the market to where no one makes enough money to stay afloat.

In addition to your observations, the higher COSTS to manufacture MU format, combined with the larger sizes and lower quantities make it difficult to "compete" with Euro. Not that Euro is bad, but we like our larger format. That's OK - no judgments.

MU format requires sheet metal bends for strength, and larger jacks - both of which tend to cost a bit more. A more "modern" trend is to make Euro panels from printed circuit boards (PCBs). This is a significant cost saving over the equivalent aluminum panel with silk screens. Mechanically, PCB panels are not an option in the larger MU format - nor, I suspect, would it be acceptable to the "older" folks.

BTW - I respectfully and lovingly refer to these "older folks" as "pony-tails" - FWIW. I was / am one - though my hair has thinned so much, its difficult to grow as long as I'd like before it simply falls out! ;)
