A somewhat selfish list of things I'd like to see Tom make

Post by Be Sandy? » Thu Feb 27, 2020 2:16 pm

The two new modules recently announced have got me thinking.
They look great but I have their equivalents in old blue modules so don't need to buy them. However there are a couple of modules I'd love to see Tom make that I'd buy in an instant.

One is a comparator.
And/or a slope detector if I'm being really selfish! I like being able to derive somewhat random but related to the rest of the patch triggers from CV. At the moment I'll sometimes use the sequencer hub and expanders to do this but a smaller more dedicated module (dual in 1FW?) would be wonderful.

The second is a sequential switch.
Something along the lines of the Doepfer one perhaps - the adjustable number of steps makes it very useful.

Feel free to add your own selfish wants to this thread :)

I'd loooove a new controller like the CTL1 - and a sequencer. New versions of the old ones or fresh. A new noisecrusher or bugcrusher type thing would rock too. So many cool old modules I'd jump on

Great calls there too Sandy for sure!
I hope Tom doesn't get flustered or annoyed by this thread - he's doing amazing work in blue and if I could never pick up another module I'd still be delighted with what I have and there's an amazing range currently available

Noisecrusher for me, but Tom already knows that. More for the noise source than the s/h. Track and hold would be nice to try. The idea of the phaser module has me super excited too. I use the DD1 ring mod portion all the time - so much I feel that others would really benefit from an updated version of that.

all i have are new blues so i love seeing the older designs come back. that said i would like to see a slope detector and sequential switch appear. really would like to see the bugcrusher return!

it's probably not exactly what you're looking for but the Dual Preamp can act as an "envelope follower" of sorts, it's super fun to pump some audio in and use it as a modulator at the same time.

Haha, no, it is fine & good! You know I always have ideas bubbling & am fine going at the natural pace.
During my tidying through January, one aspect was to remember all the different projects I'd begun & try to consider how to move them all forward gradually - I can say that a good few of the ideas already mentioned are in process, though you all know I don't make firm promises at such early stages - sometimes ideas fly forwards, but often they need time & space to evolve.

Equally, very good to share your ideas!

One thing I would love in BB format would be a dedicated (small, dual?) controllable slew limiter for glide functions - would be so cool after the DDSR for example. I know the dual filter can perform this function well but love to use them for voice/filtering duties. A (Serge style) slope generator with input would also be great for this

Well I did come up with a Dual Up/Down Glide 2FW design (which could also switch to being an oscillator!) a couple of years ago but it had some strange/bad/unacceptable behaviour at low rates which kind of killed it so far.. I should look back.

+1 on dual slew, bugcrusher, phaser... most of the things mentioned

I'd also love to see some simple utility modules, switches, format converters. (I know they can be easily DIYed but...)

For the moment I've just been sending a slowish envelope to the VCO fm input, and tuning so that it jumps an octave/some interval. Glide would be better though!

Totally on board with the sequential switch suggestion - almost had one in the recent logic module design Tom made but alas!

The Old Blue Gate Delay module, with added CV control of delay time, would be really nice to use in combination with a step sequencer e.g. Le Seq to add some funk / swing on a per step basis. This can kind of be approximated with Envelopes... but the Gate Delay module seems like a cool addition to the other clocking stuff.

Yeah, I've thought of that a few times - especially wondering on possibilities for voltage control...
