Funny story, sort of. I designed myself some cheeks to mount a few Serge boats and located a laser cutting shop near me: Bristol design forge. Got the cheeks made and went to collect them today.

First thing the chap said was “I suppose you know Tom Bugs...”

I ordered this morning metal cheeks from a layout I adapted a bit for 6 frames and realized 10 mins ago that I have deep frames
I just called the fabric to cancel. They were not very happy (first time I had to do with them).
I need actually to re-think the all thing (bottom, depth, 3rd hole placement etc).

So I made all corrections for the cheeks holding the deep frames and I should be able to order soon. Maybe next week.
Once they are made and I know concretely if everything's ok, then I'll share here the files.
I'm making 6 frames cheeks for my old blue system, but I'll do also a layout to share for 5 if needed.

The cheeks are actually a bit higher now than in the 3D preview, so the power cable fits well.

Was just getting ready to put my bugs together with some 3fw cheeks that I have. Took the screws out of the frames, put the cheeks up to the frames and CRAP. The screws I have are too short.
What type of screw goes into the side of the frame?

Thanks!

Ah, M4 (pan head) - you probably want 16-20mm length but obviously depends on cheek thickness.

3 months later...
Still seeking M4 black screws, but I couldn't wait to mount the system.
I picked up the cheeks this morning from the painting place and was impatient to check that everything's ok with my measurements.

The painting is powder coating ("thermolaquage" in french). Really fine result. Unfortuantely I didn't think of giving a few cases with the cheeks, to get them in blue, so that when placed at the bottom, the front side would be also blue.
The price for the painting was a flat rate of 65 EUR, so I could have given whatever to do together with the cheeks (it goes all in one cabin).
I paid 153.60 EUR for the pair of alu cheeks. They made them from the DXF files I gave to them. These are for deep frames, though my red modules are in a shallow case for now.
I also made one pair of blue cheeks for shallow cases. I actually cancelled this order by phone 5 mins after sending the order via email, remembering that my old blue system was in deep cases, not shallow! But they forgot I called and they made them. I'll have to check if the cases can be powered once mounted with these cheeks.

With the cheeks the system takes less space than earlier. So I reorganized the studio...

I'll try to make better photos, so you see the space between rows and then I'll share the DXF / SVG files here.
I'll add the shallow ones too after I controlled that all is ok.

And as a friend mentionned, now the system sounds even better :hihi:

As promised here is the layout for the cheeks holding 6 deep frames, the ones I made for my old blue system.
A layout based on Tom’s design as seen in the first post of the thread.
Feel free to use it. And don’t hesitate to delete the (part of the) logo cutout if you wish.
The ZIP file [310 KB] contains a text file, a .JPG with 3D preview, a .PNG with dimensions and the layout in .DXF, .EPS, .SVG formats:

The 3D preview is accurate, but here you can also see on photo the distance between cases:

Everyone still loving their 5Frame cheeks? I think I'm going to get some made up in August.
Also, Tom - what thickness of wood are you using for the cheeks?

Hi,

A customer has asked me to produce end cheeks for his Bugbrand frames, and I have a question about mounting the frames to the end cheeks.

All the photos I've seen show M4 bolts which screw from the outside of the end cheeks so I guess there are threaded holes in the ends of the Bugbrand frames. Is that correct?

What I would like to do is mount the frames to the end cheeks by screwing from the inside of the frame into threaded inserts like these, which are mounted on the inner face of each end cheek.

Image

I've done this with Serge systems, so you avoid having screw heads on the outside of the end cheeks

Image

What do you think? Is this feasible?

The biggest question is whether the Bugbrand frames have threaded screw holes built in? Or do you use a separate nut inside the frame to pull the M4 bolt tight? If I know that, I can probably work the rest out.

Cheers!

Hi Rob,
Good to have this asked publicly - equally you're always welcome to email direct.
Yes, the frames have captive M4 'nutserts'.
Give me a mo & I'll upload a dimension image of the ends for your ref. ----- OK, added below:::

Many thanks for the info!

I'm still working with the customer to establish exactly what they need, but if more detail is required I'll be in touch :-)

Cheers

Does anyone have a recommended thickness for acrylic? If the stars align, I'm hoping to make a 5 frame set.
