Quadrature Sine (2020)

Post by BugBrand » Wed Feb 26, 2020 9:32 am

Just about to be released (price likely similar to CVCO).
Similar to the old SYN2B but with Tune/Fine instead of the 10-turn dial.

Only two outputs Sin (0deg) and Cosine (90deg) as most CV inputs can easily invert for the 180/270 phases.

FM is either Linear (AC coupled) or Expontential (which has +ve or -ve polarity switching)

Yes, Freq-Shift is slightly in mind, though no renewed investigations as yet - there is a header on the back which should link to a future expander for this.

Waiting to calibrate the first batch..

Hot stuff.
When you switch to sub does it take a while to get going like the old SYN2B?

Yes, that's standard - oscillations build up quickly at the top of the LFO range, so best to give a quick push (eg. with +10V to V/Oct input) when first powered on. Once oscillating normally, you can switch between ranges no problem.

Hi all. I can appreciate, conceptually, why it would be good to have sine waves 90° out of phase from each other, but I'm not sure I understand how to best use them in a patch. Could anyone give some basic examples? Or perhaps I'm overthinking this and it's just always good to have sine waves available. Thanks!

So you can draw circles on an oscilloscope 8-)
That's my appeal, anyway...

The 90 degree thing is nice for LFOs. One output is just starting to reverse direction (up/down) when the other is more rapidly crossing zero. So imagine one is panning your signal and the other is working a filter or wavefolder for that signal. The coordination of those effects makes them seem less like arbitrary decorations.

Or laser.. I'd forgotten that we had a quick play around that at EMS in Stockholm some years back.

Yes, agreed, quadrature phases feel most useful for me as LF modulators - though also one trick for the Linear FM is to feed one wave back to self-modulate - generates a near saw with one wave and pulsey-sine (pic needed!) on the other.
