Multiplier - polarizing VCA
Multiplier - polarizing VCA
aka 4-quadrant multiplier or "ring-modulator"
Just added to the new site: https://www.bugbrand.co.uk/product/multiplier/
I had a bit of a hard time simply describing it!
When you use two modulation inputs along with the offset control you can do a lot at audio or sub-audio rates.
Effectively, you've got the sum of Initial + the 2 Modulations ---
when this sum is 0V you get zero output
when this sum is +5V you get x +1 amplitude output
when this sum is +10V you get x +2 output
when this sum is -5V you get x -1 output
when this sum is -10V you get x -2 output

Ah, you mentioned this was coming! Didn’t realize it was so quick!
Maybe next year! Have so much to explore with what I have!

perfect timing

Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
It has actually been done for a month or two - I just wanted to complete the new website before putting it out + the general time chaos the last months.northerntao wrote: ↑Thu Sep 17, 2020 3:03 pmAh, you mentioned this was coming! Didn’t realize it was so quick!
Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
Very interesting and intriguing design there Tom. Must sound crazy with 3 audio rate signals!?
Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
Looks great Tom! Can’t wait to hear what it can do!

Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
On the old DD1 we have 2 ins and one out with a level control on each input, using the ‘RM’ setting would it be the same result as feeding the same signals to the yellow input and one blue input on this module? Or is the circuitry a bit different?

Circuitry def a bit update but, yeah, similar ball park.

Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
Cool!
Wondering if it can work with clock signals (probably no, but... )?

Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
Very nice! I understand that ring is possible with the dual VCA, but having a dedicated module is ideal.

Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
Yes - DC coupled, though inverted output would become 0 to -10V so possibly of little use?!

Anyone received one of these yet? Wanna hear some samples!

Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
I have one and a low pass gate in this 2x 11FW synth voice. Tell me how you want it patched.
Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
Well I'd be curious with anything, slow and audio rate modulator (3-4 octave higher than carrier). Random pitch on both carrier and modulator. Slow modulator sweep. I'd really like tonal stuff too. I'm very curious about this module! Also 2 modulator!
Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
Yeah, I started doing some recordings but got a bit lost... did finish the LPG ones at least but that seemed a clearer remit (eg I tried with two modulators but frankly it was hard to convey what was going on!)

Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
A compact vco into the multiplier then on to the lpg. 2nd Compact vco in to multiplier on mod 1. Sine and looping env DC mixed to Penrose for pitch and gate out to hit input on LPG. That's the basic, followed by wave shaping and other changes all on the fly.

Re: Multiplier - polarizing VCA
Thank you! I never tried ring modulation so was good to learn something new. There are some excellent tones to be found. And the second mod input on the multiplier was useful to introduce more bass punch together with some initial offset.
