I think there is an app called Grain Science that does granular stuff.

There's a couple of other apps worth a look at as well:

http://www.borderlands-granular.com/app/

and

http://samplr.net/

They seem to do some pretty cool things, but I just can't really get excited enough about working on the iPad to test them out.

How to prepare and copy your own samples to the MicroGranny's microSD card

1. Download the Audacity audio editor for free:
http://www.audacityteam.org/

2. Import your samples via File -> Import -> Audio:
Image

Select multiple samples by SHIFT-clicking:
Image

This will load all samples as individual tracks:
Image

3. Set the Project Sample Rate to 22050hz:
Image

4. If you have stereo samples in there, convert them to mono via Tracks -> Stereo Track to Mono:
Image

5. Export your samples via File -> Export Multiple, choosing WAV (Microsoft) signed 16-bit PCM and the following settings:
Image

6. The sample names have to be two characters long with the first one being a letter in capitals and the second one being a number. E.g. A1.wav, E3.wav, etc.

To rename sample files more quickly, use the free NameChanger software for OSX:
https://mrrsoftware.com/namechanger/

6.1 Check "Hide extensions by default" in the Preferences
Image

6.2 Drag up to 10 files into the window, choose "Sequence" and the following settings:
Image

6.3 Continue until you have all samples renamed.
Image

For Windows, try out Advanced Renamer (haven't tried it out myself, but it should do the job):
https://www.advancedrenamer.com/

7. Copy the samples to the MicroGranny 2's microSD card. :nana:

Troubleshooting:

- Replace your battery (or use an external power plug) when your MicroGrammy 2 behaves weirdly. E.g. when freezing during sample search or reporting EROR on screen.

- Put the original ZZ.wav sample on the microSD card too, to receive a greeting and see the MIDI channel when powering the unit on. This is kind of a bug. Download the original sample packs here (scroll down to "Sample Banks"):
http://www.bastl-instruments.com/instru ... crogranny/

- Use SDFormatter to format your microSD cards if you're having trouble:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

Thanks for all the info flx ,
I'm on 2.4 and thought instead of buying another chip I just get the ftdi thing

So it it the basic ftdi usb programmer ? About £11 / $15
I have a usb lead for the atmegatron but this seems very different

Yes the FDTI Programmer price seems right. It's this one: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9716

The USB cable is just a regular Mini USB thing (not the super thin one which you find on smartphones, but one step "larger").

As an owner of a microgranny I can say that noise seems to definitely be a normal thing

Thanks for the kind words! It took me a while to see the MicroGranny's potential apart from a fun box to play with when I'm traveling, but now with the whole MIDI thing, it's wired up in my studio space as well. :nana:

flx thanks to your midi tutorial I now also use it as a whole drum kit on secquenced by 1 midi track, sampling drums live from my circuit and electribe and changing banks on the fly for different songs / section. I imagine it like a mini SP 1200 with it's lo-fi compression!

Already have an MPC but very tempted to get one of these...mostly for the onboard mic. Hope that won't be overkill!

Quick question : how difficult it is to change the OS chip ? Does it require soldering ?

Thanks !

Got my 2.5 chip to switch out - apparently not, just carefully lift the old one out and install the new one - I read somewhere needing a screwdriver/tweezers (to lever out/remove the old one), but I can't get on the Bastl Forum at the mo for some reason - the info can be found there if you want to check 8-)

flx wrote:Just updated my MicroGranny to v2.5 and as usual with Bastl Instruments stuff, it's super easy to do yourself, especially if you are on Mac OSX and have one of those Sparkfun FTDi USB programmers:

1. Download their production gitHub thing here (green button "clone or download"):
https://github.com/bastl-instruments/production

2. Extract the downloaded ZIP somewhere

3. Unscrew the bottom of the MicroGranny 2, remove the battery, connect the programmer like this:
Image

... and slide the power switch to battery. The MG should turn on now via the USB programmer.

3. Double-click "setup.command", type in the number of your USB programmer (might have to scroll up in the Terminal window to see it) and hit enter.

4. Double-click the "upload.command" file, enter the number of the file "microGranny2_5.cpp.hex" and hit enter. It will tell you when it's done.

5. Close the window, disconnect everything and turn the MG switch to off ("plug").

6. Put the battery back into the MG and switch it on again. During the start-up procedure, there should be a little dot in the lower right corner of the LCD indicating that you're on v2.5 now:
Image

7. Download the new free sample pack from the Bastl Instruments website if you like and put it on the microSD card:
http://www.bastl-instruments.com/instru ... crogranny/

Rock on! :bananaguitar: :deadbanana: :sb: :goo:
THANKS A MILLION for posting that!

i was going about it the whole wrong way and i have THREE of these to update!

one of them kept giving me an error though.
would that be because it was already updated to 2.5?

more noiz!

Got my microGranny this afternoon, just wanted to drop by and say this little machine can drag cheap samples to the depths of hell and back. Sadistic. I love it :deadbanana: :sb: :deadbanana:

I'm in love with my MG2.5, I ordered a Trinity SQNCR to sequence it (still waiting for it). I've seen some videos of two microgrannies run together, that seems like a great way to use them. Really considering ordering a second MG.

BTW, I've asked Bastl a million dumb questions and they always get back to me quickly with a helpful answer.

I figured today that I can use my MG as a bit reduction / distortion effect unit by pushing record and allowing the monitoring of the incoming audio but without actually recording it. Planning to put a monotron after the MG for some extra control with the filter. Anyone using it like that?

I am trying to sequence my MG per the tutorial posted above, but mine will not switch between samples using the 6 lower octave midi notes. Any ideas?
I am my own source of uncertainty.
