I've been playing away at this thing tonight... UFB... this thing is absolutely unreal.

This posting appears to be real... ATV founder Ikutaro Kakehashi (aFrame coinventor), founder of Roland has died - may he rest graced by the music his work has inspired.

http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2017/ ... -has-died/

I am choosing to believe some part of his spirit lives on in his work - and in the new aFrame that I cradle in my hands.

The manual says that the head can be damaged by direct sun or leaving it in a hot car but this probably applies to most quality instruments. I'm saving my pennies for one.

I appears to be a robust, textured polycarbonate. The bamboo frame is really solid and makes a great surface to play off of. First order quality.

Eventually, I plan to get a slim hardcase for it.

I want it to last as long as I do.

That must be a ton of fun Dan. Nice pedalboard too.
Really sad news about Ikutaro Kakehashi.

Yes, it seems pretty robust and is very well made. It feels like a professional instrument.

ATV are going to be doing cases, Pete Locket showed a picture of his aFrame with a case. Its a soft case with the corner cut off. I asked ATV and they said they were looking at releasing it, not sure when though, they could be busy for a while? I do want a case for mine so if you find anything suitable let me know, I'll do the same.

A question to aFrame owners. How is designing sounds on the unit? Single parameter at a time seems cumbersome.

Actually its OK, first hour is a bit awkward but once you get it in your head its fine. Each section, so effects, sound, global is all single layer. editing sounds is fairly straightforward, the top 2 buttons on the left scroll through each parameter and the lower 2 jump to the start of each section, so it goes Main/Sub/Extra/Dry/Mute/Pan/Level/Send/Master

Theres not a ton of parameters for each section and Main/Sub are the same with Extra pretty close. When you get into it you realise its quite simple but is also very deep.

Man, Sweetwater had a demo unit that had about 10% off retail price. I put it in my cart, and decided to think about it. Well, someone bought it...still not sure if I was going to do it but I am really on the cusp here.

I had asked the ATV rep about powering the aFrame with a USB battery instead of the supplied wall wart.

He suggested the following...

A USB - barrel cable :

https://www.amazon.com/Smays-Barrel-Con ... dc+4.0+1.7

Combined with a suitable battery, I selected the following:

https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore- ... rcore+slim

Another option suggested was:

https://www.amazon.com/Jackery-5000mAh- ... ckery++usb

I've got the pieces, but not run the final test as yet.

I was playing mine a couple hours at a time this weekend with one of these tucked in my lap on a short cable:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... ttery.html

Really nice to be free of one set of cables... now I need to work out a wireless audio solution. :deadbanana:

...oh, and yeah I haven't posted since I got mine, this thing is frickin amazing and everything I've always wanted from an electric drum. [i was always disappointed the newer Korg Wavedrums weren't real Wavedrums like the original using the head and skin vibrations for synthesis etc.]

I would buy as small a battery as you can find, I wouldn't go much more than 2500mah if I could help it, that still gives approx. 5 hours play time!!. I had a larger battery kicking around but used it on a USB cable on my lap, with the smaller capacity battery I have it attached to the aFrame itself with velcro, so much easier to deal with. I think ideally a 1500mah would be spot on. 3 hours run time and if you needed more autonomy you could just have a spare battery. it would be nice and light on the aFrame. See pic below for my battery setup.

Has anybody seen something similar that sends out CV?

Yes it is!

No, nothing I know of other than a Roland Handsonic and a midi to CV.
I do often think having an output from the pressure sensor would be really useful. Would be hard to get anything else out of it as its "just" processing the input from the piezo's.

The Spirit Lives On

Mr. Charles,

Indeed Mr. K’s spirit lives on in his work. His philosophy is shared by all of us at ATV. The connection between the musician’s creative spirit and emotion with the aFrame, aDrums, and aD5 is the primary focus. ATV is dedicated to developing advanced electronic musical instruments known for superior quality, expressive playability, and exceptional sound. We are very pleased to know you and other aFrame players continue to have inspired and emotionally moving performances.

Once I get everything else paid off, that ATV is next on the horizon. Been moving in an acoustic/electric direction of late, electric kalimbas, electric udu, etc, so this is right up my alley. Innovative,, with great sound and playability.

And thanks for the website.

You will really like the aFrame given what your saying above. It is very expressive.

wow - i'm going to have some credit to use at Sweetwater...this thing looks great!!

my biggest concern is how difficult it might be to play for someone with no experience at playing 'real' percussion instruments.

how is it that I've just discovered this....

Count me in as well! Ordered today. Looks like a very expressive fun beautiful instrument. Was strongly influenced by the story of its design.

Dan you should get a commission from ATV for how many folks you have inspired to pick one of these up.

i was doing some research on the aframe, and ran across the sundrum: http://www.valterpercussion.com/en/products/sundrum/

now, this doesn't have the same kind of sonic flexibility that you find in the aframe, but it looks awfully cool, and the fact that you can so easily tune it looks great.
