It looks great on your couch! If only we could hear it... (hint, hint).
Here you go :hihi: A first mellow test jam with the Mäander alone, plus a little bit of external reverb.

I found it to be pretty easy to program once I cracked the manual. It’s pretty straightforward really.
I'm actually a little surprised how well it works  I've read the manual before it arrived and was a little unsure about some of the seemingly unconventional UI concepts (HOLD mode and adjusting the envelopes for example), but now that I have it in front of me, the interface totally has a nice flow to it and it's really playable.

That sounds great, flx. Thanks for the demo. Sequencing those filter bands really allows for nice percussive elements.

That's a great demo! Very helpful in terms of purchasing. Seem like it might slot right in with my current setup... Always nice to have to have new stuff to anticipate!

What is the inspiration for this machine? What else sounds similar?

I don't know what inspired them, but Flame already produced Eurorack modules that are similar to components of the Mäander: the 4VOX VCO and the Curves filterbank. But as far as sound, it's pretty special. I mean I guess you could patch it up in modular with a filterbank, sequencer(s), etc. As far as a hardware animated filterbank goes, there's the Moog MuRF, but it greatly limited in comparison to this.

Thank you - also to everyone else! :tu: Very happy that you liked that video!

Regarding setup integration, I haven't played with the external audio input yet, but being able to sequence it through the filterbank as well, could probably tie a performance with multiple instruments together nicely. The Mäander also has two DIN MIDI inputs, which are merged internally. This lets you connect a keyboard to play the paraphonic wavetable/FM synth and a drum machine or another sequencer to trigger noise, external input and the filter bands for example. So you could spread out those duties among MIDI devices.

I’m still getting the hang of using it with external audio - so far my results haven’t been as expected but I’m still learning. And cheers for the amazing demo!

Here’s another jam with airy, delicate stereo sounds. Again, just one take recorded straight from the Mäander, with a little bit of reverb added in post.

I love how the Mäander lets you freely work with the four 16-step bars. You can loop a single bar or play the bars in any order with a simple and quick button combination. Just hold the button of the first bar that should play and then while its held, press the other bar buttons in the desired order. Can be done on the fly with one hand. It’s seems so weird to me now, that this is not implemented in other sequencers. It’s so simple :D

EDIT: OMG! I just found out that the step sequencer can have up to 32 steps per bar, not just 16 :woah:

I hope Flame is giving you some love for all the publicity. This machine is one of those sleeper hits I think, so it’s good to see some new vids!

Totally! This instrument needs more attention :sb: I’ve been trying out some live “from scratch” improvs and I really like how one can easily save snippets to patches and recall them without any hiccups. I’m also getting more familiar with the repeats knob and temporarily looping sequences.

Check out the old Radikal Technologies Spectralis. It does a LOT of what this does plus a whole lot more. Very clunky to get around, though ~ the analog synth section has something like 21 pages of menu items. Unfortunately, development on it stopped before it was finished - there are buttons that don’t do their labeled functions and it is a bit rough around the edges.
But it does sound awesome and the filter bank is amazing. Sound samples from the Spectralis might give you some ideas for exploring on the Flame synth.

Thanks for these demos and your comments. I was very interested in this when it came out, and I am once again. Nothing like great gear and great demos to get one's GAS levels into money-spending terrain. At this point I may be able to hold out for a month before :75: and a lot of change disappears!

From what I can read this will slot in well with my current setup and modus operandi. Thomas US is advertising an excellent price.

Bye-bye :75: !!!!!

Here's a little experiment with audio feedback. Patch a basic output to input feedback loop and then raise the filter band faders to make the frequency bands resonant and self-oscillate. There's not much wiggle room, but sometimes it's a cool effect. For example when spoken words emphasise certain frequencies which then start to oscillate.

This sounds great. It didn't sound like you were using the sequencer, is that right?

Thank you! I did use the sequencer. It was very slow though, like 70 bpm or something around that and there was just one long note per bar. I was looping and chaining the bars in various combinations then and also transposed the sequence, which was being quantized into a blues scale. I’m also switching to another preset at one point, which had some very subtle noise shots in the sequence.

Two new jams! Both with some additional drums from Bram Bos’ Ruismaker iOS plugin. The Mäander’s clock is quite alright. Very little drift over 3-4 minutes, compared to the one in Cubasis 2 on the iPad. So I can simply load the recorded Mäander audio file in there and sequence the drums without the need for time stretching or other sync stuff :tu:

So, question, what does the Maander have over Curves plus, say Braids as voice. What would I need to make a Curves behave as the Maander. Which would be most versatile assuming that I would controlling a Maander via MIDI from the my Octatrack if I had a Maander.

You can control Curves via MIDI too. You can also upload sequences and play them synced to you modular clock. Each filter band has a CV input too to control its VCA, so if you have 12 envelopes or other CV generators and a trigger sequencer for all of them in your rack, you could do much more than what the Mäander can do (AR envelopes and velocity only).

For the wavetable VCO you could of course also choose the Flame 4Vox, which has MIDI control as well.

Sure. More flexibility modular as always, but Euro rig is not that crazy. I certainly would not be able to control all twelve band filters with the rig I have now and once I added all those, even considering I already have Braids that could serve as a sound source it would devour most all my space and exceed the cost of the Maander considerably. So at best if I added curves, I. The short term I would a few voices to feed it audio, a pamelas new work out, and an octatrack as the primary tools to exploit it. The Maander seems entirely self contained and very nearly as capable. Further thoughts?
