Korg Nu:Tekt NTS-1

Post by Dogma » Wed Sep 11, 2019 4:45 am

That is one terrible name

It sounds freakin amazing though - $100! This and the easel :)

Anyways what’s the actual specs of the beast? It can run the *louge SDK so it’s powerful- do I just assume those specs with that hardware (relative obviously)

I’m super exited about this....
look up!

I don't know....Seems kinda big and bulky and needs large gorilla hands to operate and maybe someone strong enough to lift it?

I was hoping it would fit on my keyring so I can control it with my smart watch and would come with LED magnifying glass :despair:

I think you can get it embedded in your arm.

This looks to be worth the $99 just for the fx. Korg is consistently the most interesting of the big synth companies.

Yeah they seem to be pushing the ‘worth it for the fx’ they do sound nice, but if it’s anything like the monotron delay , yr really gonna have to watch levels.

Still looks good for 99. I intend to get one, expanded fx is the way forward.

Has anyone been able to sync the delay/effects to clock input?

I don't think that's possible with the built-in effects. Perhaps someone can create one that does it?

BTW, it has a sleep function that can't be disabled. Kinda puts a damper on using it as an effects box. Hopefully Korg will address it with a firmware update.

Terrible feature to not allow user control on. I want to say it's like an hour shutoff without moving something on the dial keys.

I think it's a lot shorter than that, maybe 15. Really quite silly. I'm not even sure why it has auto sleep to begin with. It's not pulling that much power.

I just cycled a key on the arp and filtered it to knowhere. That keeps the fx on so far after 45 minutes.

7 Mutable Instruments Plaits modes and an Elements mode are available in the Logue SDK as oscillators via GitHub, by Peter Allwin. He notes that they have 'Experimental support for the Nu:tekt NTS-1' – (This has been around since Nov '19)

https://github.com/peterall/eurorack-prologue/releases

Has any one tried these on their NTS-1? I added damnatron's 'morph' osc and played around with it, smooth morphing through various waveforms, quite nice.

There's a youtube vid with the plaits mode showing how it doesn't really sound good. I guess it's not that easy to port code over.

Thanks for this workaround! This method has been working for me too.

So if I synced this with my Minilogue, would I basically have an XD?

Not quite, because the NTS-1 is still monophonic.

For those like me who find it hard to see the position of the A and B knobs... take a white or gold crayon, fill in the ident on each knob, and wipe off the excess from the top surface. Color coordinated and much easier to see the knob positions!

I did that to my Monologue with a 0.7mm paint pen, but those knobs are a bit too small for that. I thought about getting Befaco micro knobs for it, but it seemed silly to pay $8 or whatever to ship $1 worth of knobs.

I used white out instead of crayon. Next time maybe some glow in the dark paint. Hopefully they make an update where the screen report numerical values.

Just got one of these today. Very cool. The effects are pretty decent, so I wanted to pair it with my MicroFreak (which sadly has no effects). This should be an ideal pairing, and indeed the effects are a really nice addition to the MicroFreak, but with the giant caveat that the NTS-1 audio input expects a stereo signal, so incoming mono will only be heard in the left side.

The MicroFreak has both a mono 1/4” and stereo 1/8” output, so I figured I’ll just use the 1/8” output, but unfortunately it’s infested with noise if the MicroFreak is powered by USB (at least with the hub I’m using). The 1/4” output is clean, but not stereo. So I can either use the 1/4” output and get a nice clean signal that only shows up in the left side of the NTS-1 output, or use the 1/8” out and hear both channels drowning in noise. I guess option #3 is to use the gigantic power adapter that came with the MicroFreak and forget about trying to use them in a portable setting. Kind of a bummer.

Seems like it would be trivial to add a setting for this on the NTS-1. Maybe I’ll bug Korg about it. Surprised no one else has mentioned the stereo-only input as a downside.

I don't have an NTS-1, but this is a common issue with stereo effects. You can just use an interconnect cable like this to essentially mult the mono 1/4 signal to both sides of the stereo input: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000068O3E/re ... B07K58VM48
