Re: Behringer - Introducing the CAT Synthesizer
I still use my '79 "Rev A" CAT, it's my favorite mono. It's the only monosynth I know of that used the SSM2040 filter chip (same as the Prophet 5 Rev2). That filter can destroy speakers when the resonance is turned up...sounds like pure electricity flowing from the synth. I'm curious to hear how closely Behringer got their copy to sound. I might have to pick one up.
Here's a sample from the Kitten, which used the same SSM2040 filter:

Well, they did use the CAT. But they probably used every other synth imaginable too. The guy in the video is reading word-for-word directly from VSE, which is just hilarious. So very Behringer. http://www.vintagesynth.com/misc/octavecat.php

RSF Kobol did too.Jason Brock wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2019 12:47 pm. It's the only monosynth I know of that used the SSM2040 filter chip (same as the Prophet 5 Rev2).

Re: Behringer - Introducing the CAT Synthesizer
Cool, but does the world need more monosynths?
I don't. But I love that they're making old synths with MIDI and USB functionality. And MIDI thru!
Who is going to buy 16 to polychain though?
What will be next in the Behringer Winter Wave?

The Cat was big in the UK - saw some great bands use them in the early 80's.
Definitely picking one up.

Re: Behringer - Introducing the CAT Synthesizer
That is a nice looking synth, I would consider buying it if I had room for it.

In a word... yes.
I think it is getting to a point where the distinctions are going to blur a bit and it may not make sense to own all of them, but who knows. I certainly would consider owning these before I would consider buying another euro filter.

Yes, it was, of the ARP Odyssey.
Probably not the point you were making? ;-)

Behringer need to fuck off forever.
This is not the place I'd imagined it to be.

Re: Behringer - Introducing the CAT Synthesizer
I've been looking at used Cats, used as they were, by Ultravox. I'm particularly fond of Oscar, and would consider a clone. But like many here, mono-a-mono synths don't add up well in a restricted-space resource. They have to very special. At this point, writing for the VCS3, etc's. That new Erica deal [Syntrx] is definitely in my radar if a bit beyond my buying power, or lack thereof.
Re: Behringer - Introducing the CAT Synthesizer
Some of us still won't buy their products because if they weren't based on some existent, likely superior design, they wouldn't particularly sell as well or have helped them gained traction in the first place. The Neutron, a single synth and least interesting, is their only original design. It's embarrassing IMO.

Re: Behringer - Introducing the CAT Synthesizer
Isn’t the Cat a copy of the Odyssey?
So, are they basically releasing a module versión copy of a synth that they already copied in keyboard version
This is seriously meta

Re: Behringer - Introducing the CAT Synthesizer
Somewhat. They definitely copied the 2-note poly mode feature, envelope section, and probably the general styling/slider interface. They sound different, waveform mixing feature is very different, and the CAT lacks Ring Mod.
I mean, in 1976 how many other monosynths were available for a company to file a lawsuit against? Might as well point out the Odyssey (and plenty of others) copied parts of the Moog Model D too.
Re: Behringer - Introducing the CAT Synthesizer
Behringer became my favorite synth manufacturer this year
Can´t wait for the UBXA, Poly Kobol and CS80

Re: Behringer - Introducing the CAT Synthesizer
the Cat is not a direct copy of the Odyssey, despite the lawsuits, etc.
the Cat SRM was my first synth and is still one of my go-tos. So much internal cross modulation possibilities. Not sure if this copies all of those special routings, like being able to turn the envelopes and OSC 1 into a four note unquantized sequencer. if you can find it, the original manual is a great read an has neat patch examples in the back.

No childish name-calling, please.
You can argue points but please do so with some sense of grace and intelligence.

Re: Behringer - Introducing the CAT Synthesizer
One of the only bits of gear I wished I had back is the Octave Cat, but I wouldn't buy a real one at this point anyways as it is too expensive now (if I could lay out that kind of cash, I'd get a Dominion One) and would take up too much space. So this is a most welcome announcement.
