Modal 002 or Novation Summit?

Post by Just me » Mon Jan 13, 2020 5:45 pm

For about the same money I can have either one of these.
I'm leaning more to the Novation Summit in my mind but thought I'd ask you folks opinion on them.
For the same money I could do a Peak and an Argon 8X. But would rather have 1 full size synthesizer.
If I have water in my ear, is it safe for me to listen to electronic music?

Where the hecc you finding an 002 for the same price? I got a Summit for $1,650 new + shipping.

Modal 002s new are $4.5k... if they were the same price I think I’d snag the Modal in that case...

However, I can not recommend the Summit enough. It’s my favorite modern (relatively affordable// <$4k) poly synth, if not tied with the Matriarch, and now Korg/ARP 2600 in their respective categories...

There is a used 002 for $2000 in my area. Otherwise they are out of my price range.

Nice, that’s a great price for a nice synth out of the range of most. Worst case you try it out and swap it for a Summit at minimal loss if any, but, I’ve never played the 002.

I believe playing something in person will tell you a lot about how much you’ll like it, no matter the price.

I’d go 002 all the way. And at that price, wow.

Since it's not possible anymore, I'll share. If you'll become disappointed it's not possible, stop reading here :hihi:

ProAudioStar momentarily had them in stock and at the original MSRP of $1,999. I had an 18% off coupon that worked likely because it was a new inventory product and they didn't adjust their code requirements.

I then tried to get it price matched at a better distributor and it worked! The $1,650, or maybe around $1,670, I can't remember, was their offer. Had I purchased it at ProAudioStar it would've been a nifty $1,640, but I've read a bit of shade towards them so I tend to stay away.

Summit can do much much more. 002 is comparably limited in many ways.. but a few mod sources, no filter fm, no wave scanning etc.

that said, 002 sounds absolutely heavenly. imo its a different league from Summit, that there is no comparison.

the oscillators, the filters,,, absolutely grandiose. one of the classics of our era. imho.

that price is crazy. i would grab it right away.

only get the 002 if you are ok with this being your sine wave--
http://xexify.com/modal/modal9900test.wav

yes all that aliasing and dc offset is "normal" according to modal.
this was from an 001
i found it to be unacceptably noisy and dirty-- no way i could've made a whole mix with those sounds.
their support was not super friendly with me either.

YMMV. i think they are a sketchy company.

the summit does 999x more with legit support from a legit company that's been around for decades. nevermind the price difference.
