I haven’t owned their stuff before, but he’s already added a bunch of ideas in his downtime, so the products usually change right after release? Or is it just expecting a few firmware revs?

Depends on your needs and desired sonic results I'd say.

yeah, I also think the massive draw of this is the 1:1 sliders:parameters.

Very much a playable FM box indeed, with a heck of a lot of grunge to its sound.

yeah i wish preen had hardware like that. but im much happier with the way it sounds. but then again im not a fan of old yamaha fm with the possible exception of the tx81z and only in the context of certain style where it fits well. i also have an ay3 and think its pretty cool in one or 2 ways.

For those who want the sound and a less elegant interface for much cheaper, try this (available in DIY or finished with case), it uses the same chip: https://www.tindie.com/products/kassers ... 8-diy-kit/

Personally, I'm just more interested in the MegaFM because the interface is really the most exciting thing about it. I just need to find the cash. I'll probably be dumb and buy this kit for now, like it but want the MegaFM interface and sell it at a loss along with other gear to buy the MegaFM if I know myself at all, hahaha

Looks like these are maybe starting to ship? (At least promo versions for demos).

Great no talking demo from Metunar:

I ended up going in for the pre-order. Very psyched to jam with it when it arrives. Should be a great springboard into FM.

sounds from the 80s. too bad that thing doesnt use more modern fm techniques. old chips are sometimes charming but to me this sounds extremely dated.

Looks like he actually listened to the requests for aftertouch.

That + the grit/grunge is the whole point of this FM Synth.

What constitutes "modern" FM? FM is FM. It's just the sound generator that varies. Plus FM is truly one form of synthesis that almost requires a little bit of effecting to make it sound more natural/less dry and "of its time". The pure FM sound often lacks any natural phasing/pitch variation that we take for granted in analog synthesis. I have no doubt this will fit in perfectly well with modern productions.

FM is FM but what you can make a DX7 sound like is not the same as what you can make an FS1R, Digitone or Akemie's Castle sound like. (Next to a ton of similar sounds obviously).

thats because of bit depths and resolutions. the 80s yamaha fm just doesnt have what the higher resolutions of the new fm stuff has. im not saying thats not what some want but i sure dont want it. im not trying to say you shouldnt want it of course. i just wish a modern fm would get this hardware treatment without costing $1500.

btw akemies castle sounds like old 80s fm too.

Also 4 vs 6 vs 8 Operators, different waveforms and algo's, filters vs no filters etc.
