In a video editing software I detach the video's audio so I can see the visual wave form. I zoom in and do my best to visually line up the wav file I recorded with the video's audio file. Then I pan them to opposite left and right and just slide that wav file around and listen till it lines up. I also record to a four track so I start recording from the camera before clicking record on the tape deck which also serves as another visual reference point.

The 44.1 recording and the video will gradually slip out of time if the sample rates don't match.
Video software seriously doesn't bother to transcode the audio?

Yes it does. Final cut pro will convert 44.1 audio to 48K.
But if you import your movie into ProTools at 48K and then import 44.1 audio it converts it to 48 but never locks up correctly it gets close but then it slowly drifts.

Or sometimes ProTools will convert to the 44.1 audio to 48K but then you’re 44.1 audio playback speed will faster and/or The pitch will be higher. And then I use a plug-in to slow it down or change the pitch. It’s giving me a headache just thinking about it I honestly don’t have those problems anymore. I learned my lesson.
