Phantom power question

Post by Umcorps » Mon Feb 10, 2020 8:54 am

I have a small sub-mixer connected to the main mixer via a pair of balanced XLR cables, output to channel input.

The main mixer phantom power is a simple, global on/off. When on it provides power to all the XLR inputs.

If I enable phantom power while the sub-mixer is connected to the XLRs, will it hurt it?

I’ve definitely done this with a small Mackie a bunch of times (for just a few minutes). It never caused any permanent damage but the mixer definitely did not work at all while phantom power was on. After the first occurrence I started carrying a spare stereo DI to isolate my mixer in situations where the house board only had global phantom power. YMMV, etc.

Thanks for that. I was wondering about using a DI box just to be sure, but that's confirmed its the way to go.
