You could argue that a tracker in a standalone box makes more sense than a DAW in a standalone box.

so what is the point of doing all that with a 2020 machine that have way more processor power?

I don´t talking about have unlimited resources, like in a DAW...neither the "DAW vs more limited systems and being creative with limits" stuff...this is an enterely different topic, but compare a machine released today with a C64 and NES kind of sequencing is pointless...unless you are into this just for nostalgia or something like this...I imagine chiptuning have a lot to do with this
Because working around a set of limitations produces a certain sound, and as such may be meaningful to continue doing even after the limitations themselves are gone. Kind of why we still like to divide octave into 12 notes instead of 195125 even though our computers could handle the latter. That combined with the fact that the older solutions were often strongly coupled with the sound generation paradigm - I'm hoping this could more freely sequence other gear, thus combining the sequencing style with more varied tone generation. Whether or not that'll be viable remains to be seen; many tracker commands and methods do not necessarily transfer to MIDI perfectly, and this seems to have rather limited CV/gate outs.

That being said, nostalgia does play a part in it - and there's definitely demand for retro-inspired music brought to 21st century with all the pixel art games coming out.

Leave an opening and someone will jump in to deliver. Ace this. Grinned.

Ps if really good articles on the Tracker pop up plz do share. I want this but still on the fence because of its limitations. Been having fun again with Renoise lately.

I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these. The wait is killing me.

Something I missed in previous videos - it seems like the voice usage might be dynamic instead of of being locked to one per track. More Digitone than Digitakt, per se. That seems encouraging.

I find myself continually intrigued by this box. Think I’m closer to buying one than skipping now.

Looks like the first wave of pre-orders is filled. Now delivery says "August". I guess this means it's a winning concept!

Interesting. Already use Renoise so know the tracker workflow...love that they put a sampler in it. ...could get this over another OT, it all depends if it's available when I'm ready to make a purchase. 🤑

couple questions for anyone who has used one:

- can you record a sample into a TRACK as it records a pattern?? like a looper? or are the sampling and sequencing features completely separate?

- can each track of a pattern have a different total length/duration?

thanks...

Pretty sure it's a no to both your questions although I've not got my hands on one yet although I've preordered and followed the release of info on it closely.

In regards to your second questions, In song mode you can load tracks from different sections into other sections so you can achieve polymeter that way

ahh, thanks... too bad! i love the design of this thing so was looking for a way to fit it into my workflow... but without easy-to-do (on the fly, etc) polymeter it may be too "Griddy" for me... sampling into a running sequence would be key as well..

It's quite easy making polymeters or euclidean stuff with the 'fill to' setting, polymeter is big in my music too although I've got that covered with my Pyramid I still think it'll be somewhat easy making that kind of thing on the tracker too with the added bonus of a very clear overview of what's going on in the overall structure of the track.

So... I caved and pre-ordered.

Doubt that I'm in the first batch of releases, though, so I figured I'd move now and keep an eye out on how the first batch is received. Can always cancel if I change my mind. But I'm liking most of what I've seen so far. Has one huge thing that I wish the Digitakt had - sample slicing. Sampling from radio is also dope, really liked that feature in the OP-1 when I had it.

I'll admit though - I'm concerned about only having two automation lanes. Hoping there's some ability to convert sample chops into individual instruments in a project to save using an automation lane purely for slicing. Would really help with drum breaks and the like.

damn you, knobs! you sold me at "granular sequencing".... totally refreshing way to look at the box.
