Rack mounted FX

Post by Flounderguts » Sat Feb 29, 2020 9:03 pm

I'm looking for a quirky, easy to use (less menu diving) rackmount FX unit to use with a new theremin.

Cheaper is better, ofc.

I've never owned any FX units before...always just used what was in my amp setup. But I need something now for live stuff...

Any candidates?

It depends....

If you want cheap as chips and an amazingly lo-fi dark sound (and by no means is that bad) look at the Alesis Midiverb II. I swear by mine and the bloom effects are stunning in a very lofi way.

If you can find one, and Ensoniq DP4 is another unreal machine that can be had cheap these days. Capable of unreal things, it’s another goto for me.
Gum is fun, but not on a cat.

My minds an art gallery.

I'd suggest looking at a Lexicon MX200. Lets you choose a pair of effects, in whatever order you'd like. Has three knobs for use with important parameters. Actually has midi and usb if you want to further the use outside of a live setup. It's been around for quite a while, so used ones are easy to find, and not too expensive (around $100). Used one extensively with a couple of older synths, and it paired up well.

For analog stuff I love the units from MAM aka Next! I have the vocoder, flanger, and phaser. Lovely vintagey tones and the flanger and phaser have CV in.

Oh and the Rockman analog stereo delay!

Quirky and easy to use, with no menu diving?

Electrix Mo-Fx. Four simultaneous effects: distortion, tremolo/panning, flanger and delay. You can turn on or off any effect or apply them to different frequency bands. Effects can sync to clock. Delay sounds great and is fun to play with. All knobs, no LCD screens. Should be fun with a theremin.

Cost effective and good - about any delay or multi effect or through a DAW in the computer

Nice, more pricy, in the range of what a Theremin cost - Strymon Big Sky (table unit), Lexicon multi effects such PCM 80, Korg SDD 2000 and SDD 3000

I tend to scan my local classifieds and follow up anything with more than 4 knobs on it and no menu deeper than a digit display. Disregard the analogue vs digital debate with rack gear, most of my favs like Alesis and zoom stuff is digital. Compressors have been the only type of rack effect that cheap ones weren't worth it, everything else has been good enough for me.

If you want to wiggle effect knobs while playing your theremin, I recommend table top effects or pedals. All my rack gear is "set n forget" as I found the ergonomics of adjusting rack gear live is not for me. Eg I just picked up the audiothingies dr a and I love it.

Not rack but the Eventide 'factor' pedals (Time/Pitch/Mod-factor and Space for reverb) are quality & relatively affordable [only mentioned because of reading the Strymon suggestion above]

TC Electronic M350. 1 knob per function, sounds great. Bit of a no-brainer if you are using it live.

MIDIVerb II is great, lo-fi and a bit limited.

I have an Lexicon MPX-1 it's a lot more in depth but comes with 199 presets. Plenty going on in there from nice reverbs to weird pitch shifting.

I'm looking for a Zoom 1204, mostly for the vocoder...

Yeah, that MO FX looks like the curry.

But only one out there on the interwebs, and it's 3 bills. oof.

Okay well maybe a dp4 missing the rack handles, broken knob or two and dead battery

What's similar to the Boss RV/DD 500 series pedals in rack form?

They used to be between $100-$200, but I guess they're becoming scarce. Still, it's one of my favorite units.

I also agree about the Midiverb 2 and cheap Lexicon and Zoom units (I have an MPX-100 and RFX-1000 plus Midiverb 2 as part of my modular rig - mostly as set-and-forget effects), but they only allow one or at most two effects at a time and are not nearly as fun to use or interactive as the Mo-Fx.
