Recording directly from mixer to phone

Post by hawkfuzz » Sat Mar 21, 2020 11:19 pm

I've made a few videos and would like to make more but hate syncing the audio to video as it takes a bit of time with the program I use and I'm ill-equipped to be doing it, however, I want to get the audio from my mixer(ufx1604) to my phone and just record a video using that audio.

It has to be possible at this point right? Some cable or some connector? I tried using a TRS cable from the headphone out to the lighting to 1/8" adapter and that recorded through the microphone. I need to acquire something but I don't know what to get.

I know I need something that is TRRS if I want to get a cable to work, but could USB work?

To use the analog mic input, you need an adapter similar to this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JZ ... UTF8&psc=1

and a direct box similar to this:

https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Passiv ... nts&sr=1-6

Mixer to direct box to xlr on the adapter. Just a mono input though.

There must be an easier way. It's not a novel idea at this point with all the "content creators" to go from a mixer to a phone now. The Roland Go:Mixer seems great but I already have a mixer, so I just want a cable solution.

Recording audio from my mixer to the phone using bluetooth? I think that would be terrible for quality and latency.

I think I have my solution though

If the Behringer audio over USB is class compliant, the camera connector to USB should work.

Well only channels 1 and 2 work for recording sometimes and not most the time. I can send audio out from iphone to the mixer but it won't record to the iphone. Not sure if it's my phone or the mixer. I need to perhaps get a USB 3 to USB-B cord.

I bet I'm doing something wrong...

Try launching the camera app, selecting video, and then connect.

You want a TRRS splitter. Little dongle cable that splitsd out teh stereo out (from phone) and provides a mono in on a separate jack.

As far as a purely analog signal path (to the phone) smartphones will only be mono, and very band-limited. What you need to do get full bandwidth stereo (or more channels) audio into a phone is an A/D convertor interface in some form that supports the camera connection (i guess this is now the lightning to USB) in the case of Apple, or "hosted-USB" mode aka OTG in the Android realm, (turns out under the hood these are essentially the same thing). Here's a link that lists some devices that can do this : https://hookeaudio.com/blog/equipment/ ... e-adapter/

Oh cool, does that work directly with your mixer? I checked out the ufx1604 and couldn't see anything about USB hosting, if that's true and this dongle works with - then perhaps the dongle provides some host-emulation facility? Definitely curious if that's the case.

It doesn't work with the native video app which is what I wanted. It does record in Garageband and the native voice app. HOWEVER, it only records what's plugged into Ch 1& 2 and nothing from the other 14 channels.

I have a different USB enabled mixer (Presonus) and use it all the time for making videos from my phone using the first method in the video you posted (powered camera connection kit). It works flawlessly. Literally plug and play. But.....

1) I don't use the native video app. I use MoviePro. Gives you full control over every aspect of the video format including the audio type, sample rate etc etc. You can also define presets so you can do different quality recordings for different situations.

2) Check the manual for your mixer. It will vary from mixer to mixer so I can't be specific but most well specced mixers with USB out you need to select which channels are sent out. It sounds like currently you've only got channels 1 and 2 enabled for USB.

The manual for the UFX1604 never released. Just a quick manual which barely goes in to anything.

I appreciate your reply. I thought there was some configuration I must need to redo but I didn't see anything in the control panel of the mixer on my computer to fix this.

I'm going to try moviepro.

Just looked at a photo of the front panel of the 1604 and it looks as if every channel is routed to USB automatically - you only get to chose between sending pre or post fader. I guess its designed to make easy multi-track recordings rather than dumping everything down to a stereo pair.

So having looks at the panel I get why you are only recording 1 and 2.

I *think* the answer might be in the main mix section. That button marked "assign to FW 15-16" Not sure if it will work with USB as well as firewire but when selected that should dump the main stereo mix to output 15/16. The possible problem is that I don't know a way of forcing iOS apps to record a specific channel. So I don't know if iOS is smart enough to pick up on audio coming in from something other than channel 1 and 2 of the connected device.

Actually $10 is a bit much for a test...I wonder if I can find something else. I do think that there's a configuration issue to blame but I can't find where. Which Presonus mixer are you using?

I tried the mix to 15/16 button to no avail. The routing is something I've been playing with as I monitor but the only thing that works is plugging into 1 and 2. In Ableton I'm able to choose which channels are being recorded. I don't imagine that it'll be 1:1 but I do think there's gotta be something

StudioLiveAR12. Use it as a sub mixer. It's kind of the inverse approach to your Behringer. When USB out is active and the mixer is in stand-alone mode just the main stereo outs are sent to USB (or the built-in SD recorder) so by default you just get a stereo pair made up from all the active individual channels post-fader.

If you hook it to a computer you then get the individual channels (sent pre-fader) instead so you can use a DAW to make multi-track recordings.

To record a stereo pair to the phone from my Mac I have an iConnectMidi 4+ interface. I use Audio Hijack to grab the mix from my main mixer (an older, Firewire Presonus model) and then route it out via the iCM audio output. The interface comes with its own cable that plugs in to the lightning connector on the phone.

Found this Sound on Sound Review, while it's not a manual, it may give you a bit more info. It seems the '15-16' button routes USB from the computer to those channels, not out to USB. Looks like it does send all 16 channels over USB or firewire though.
I expect it's whatever app on your phone you're using. I can't imagine any basic video app supporting multitrack recording as standard, that's a pretty specialist use case, which will probably involve spending money... ;)
I'm not buying a maths though, not my idea of fun...

Just had a thought. I presume you want to record the entire mix to your phone, well if you don't need all 16 channels (I see there's 4 fx returns you can use as well...) there could be a way to do it. Create your mix using channels 3-16 + whatever else you need, make sure channnels 1 & 2 aren't contributing to the mix. Take your mix out and feed it back into channels 1&2 - they're now your mix - which you can record. Hell, doing it this way you can even compress and EQ your mix before recording if you want. :)
