Looking for a sampler

Post by Koekepan » Sun Apr 26, 2020 1:20 pm

This is as an adjunct to my hardware studio.

I already have lots of rompling power, synthesis power and effects power.

I don't want something that will play back samples, but is a bother to get anything into. This disqualifies tools like a Volca Sample (which might otherwise be a great choice).

I would like at least mono, ideally stereo sampling direct into it.

I appreciate, but do not require, onboard retuning/timestretching capabilities.

MIDI in is a flat requirement. No MIDI? No sale.

Desktop format is preferred. I want to grab this thing, slap it on a desk, cable it up, record some noises, and then MIDI drive it into my recorder.

Looping capability is irrelevant, I won't pay a red cent extra for it.

I'm not really looking for a sample chop function, although sample mangling in general is welcome. I'm happy to have something that I can just spit back out and effect in my signal chain.

Low price is good.

Any recommendations?

I just bought an MPC and it ticks all those boxes. And you get a killer sequencer as well. I’ve got a ton of other samplers but I’m using the MPC and the S612 now exclusively, and will probably put the other ones up for sale soon.

There are not that many desktip models. Akai S1000 or similar does the job (but is pretty large and heavy).

The Akai MPC 500 has been rather cheap recently. I still like that one a lot! The interface is actually pretty good despite the small screen. Also great for the couch, vacation, etc.

For a more expensive and way crazier device, I can very much recommend the basic version of the Little deFormer 3. Takes a USB stick to get samples on it or you can record stereo samples super quickly without much setup at all. And yeah ... it can totally deform your samples and does tons more :D

1010 Music Blackbox seconded.
Autosample on MPC's is pretty nifty too.

1010 music stuff is great, especially for clean sampling. Otherwise get a rack mount ensoniq and plunk it on your desk :)

You can buy a <$200 Akai MPX16 player. Does everything you want in stereo loads from SD card.

It does look as if the main choices are used devices, or the MPX/MPC options from Akai, plus the dark horse of the 1010.

The 1010 looks really cool, but I admit that it seems more like a groovebox type of thing than a sample delivery system as such. The MPX16 looks like almost exactly what I'd wanted.

Now to decide whether something like the One is worth $500 more to me. It does have a lot of capabilities, after all.

Do any Blackbox owners also have or had a MC 707 and care to comment on which they enjoy using more as a sampler.

Read well into the mpx before getting one, Akai has fixed a lot of issues, but it's still depending on your intended use it might be a satisfactory device or a horrible experience.

Lots of experience shared here: viewtopic.php?t=108585

Ooof.

Yeah, the bug litany on the MPX doesn't sound good.

The MPC One is about the same price as the 1010 (depending on where you buy) so that's an option. Then there's always the 707.

Hm. Lots to think about.

(For those who are urging me to consider the second-hand market, I'm not angrily opposed to the idea, but I like warranties and service and new capacitors, and I will generally pay extra for those amenities despite being a cheapskate in other ways.)

Since it sounds like all the groovebox and sequencing features will be wasted on you.. why not get more of what you might grow to appreciate? I vote tasty chips gr-1, granular sampler.. you might love how you can warp and twist samples besides just playing then back.

Yeah I am looking for one too for my hardware rig! there aren't too many I was set feature wise on the small akai mpx but yeah scary!
The tiptop one seems the best for me.... but I would prefer a simple desktop

Surely its an SP404. Just ignore its pattern sequencer.
It looks like crap, but it ticks the boxes.

Kja: it's not that the features would be wasted on me as such, so much as that I already have sequencers and so on, so while I'm not completely opposed to them, it seems a little too much to buy the features all over again. But if that's the best option for getting a good sampler, I wouldn't scream and start a revolution either.

I do like the idea of the GR-1. Not the cheapest, but one hell of a thing for some of my more psychedelic work.

They never made a good sampler. Other than the s612.

It just dawned on me: wouldn't the Electribe Sampler fit the bill?

From what I understand it will take audio in, it will allow for basic fiddling (including autoslicing, repitching and reverse and a variety of effects), and it can be driven by MIDI.

Or am I missing something?

It's broadly price competitive with the MPX16, while having a much better reputation in the market, and a bit cheaper than even the MPC One.

Thoughts?

I'd recommend going carefully through the sampling section in this review. Considering your use case the Electribe Sampler isn't a recommendation I'd make.
