Pre-built Yocto v1 Thoughts?

Post by Annwn » Fri May 15, 2020 12:19 am

Not being DIY inclined, I'ver never really paid much attention to these. However one has come up for sale 2nd hand and pre-built and my curiosity was piqued.

Aside from the obvious problem of reliability relying on the competency of the builder, is there anything else to be aware of before I jump on it? It seems they pretty much nail the 808 sound and I'd rather avoid the B word as far as 808 clones go. I'm aware it misses some swanky features from the V2 but I think I can live with a more authentic 808 sequencing approach.

I did do a search but didn't see any other mention of Yocto in the general section. If I missed it somehow, apologies and please delete and merge.

Hey there ! I'm an happy owner of one of those boxes and I love it hard. It does really nail the 808 sound, and even tho the firmware was left for dead by the maker in profit to the V2, there is an active community of users who have made a lot of improvment and added features such as tap recording, better midi sync, solo function etc.

I bought mine from someone who had it built be a pro, never had any problems with it.

Ohh,

If you don't buy it please send the link. I was looking at one for ages but felt sad once it finally sold.

the yocto sounds way closer to an 808 than the miami imo and sounds more pleasing to the ear overall. i also think version 2 of the yocto has unnecessary add ons. prefer the purity of mk1.

I had a yocto built set in the Erica cases , which are lovely.

Sound wise it was better than the behringer I’ve got now , but not enough for the extra cost.

I actually prefer my Nord drum 3 for 808 sounds and it does way more besides. For me 808 is about nostalgia rather than the sound these days. I think there are much more interesting analogue drum machines out there.

Great, thanks folks. I'm aware the 808 is pretty cliche by now but I'd prefer a more straight-up approach than all the bells and whistles of the other clones out there. So the Yocto V1 does sound like it should tick the box.

Funny you mention the Nord Drum h4ndcrafted, I'm currently using my NL2 for drum programs which are much more useable than I first anticipated. But I'm missing the other Nord channels for standard synth duties. Should still keep an eye out for a Nord Drum too. Thanks for the reminder.
