DrumKid - aleatoric (random) drum machine

Post by mattybrad » Wed Jun 17, 2020 3:08 am

Hi,
I've just launched my first drum machine, and even though it's not modular, someone suggested it might be of interest on this forum. It's a lo-fi "aleatoric" drum machine, meaning that it uses randomness to generate/modify rhythms. This randomness can be adjusted using live controls. It outputs both audio and MIDI. Here's a video of it in action (probably the best way to understand the concept):

And here's DrumKid's page on my website:

https://mattbradshawdesign.com/projects/drumkid/

A few things that might be of interest to modular users:
  • It can send and receive MIDI clock
  • It sends MIDI note data
  • The design is open source, uses an Arduino Nano, and is deliberately hackable, so you could theoretically add some Eurorack functionality yourself if that's your cup of tea
Happy to answer any questions people have about DrumKid. Also would love to hear ideas for how to turn this into a Eurorack module, since this seems to be the number one request since I launched it. My feeling is that it would make most sense to just do away with the audio if this were a Eurorack module, and just have it as a cool sequencer with lots of CV inputs for the various randomness parameters, but I'm open to suggestions :)

:yay: Looking forward to hear from the technical peeps on the forum as to where this could go. Nice work

It definitely would be really cool having a sequencer like that in modular world! Patterns sound really nice!

Purchased. Seems like a fun way to break my habit of always creating rhythm tracks which sound the same.

purchased, bit of a no-brainer for me
could you give some more details about the midi out spec pls? does it send "drum kit" info to one channel-- as in 1 octave of notes, or does it send multitimbral info over multiple channels? is there a way to set the channel?

It currently sends all MIDI notes on channel 10, using the standard General MIDI drum mapping (kick on C1, snare on D1, etc), but the note numbers and channels can be changed if you don't mind editing the source code.

Here's a quick track messing around with the Drumkid controlling a jazz brush drum kit in battery

I just had an email from Matt and loading custom samples will be a feature in the next firmware update. He's also going to make a tutorial video to show how it's done.

Hey Matt!

Great to see you over here - of course I'd be interested in a Euro version too lol!
Loading yer own samples sounds like a great update so looking forward to getting in deeper and messing about!

Great job Liddlepud!!! Thats exactly what I was hoping for with the midi out - Ive not hooked mine up to midi yet. I jam with a bass player and we are often using the same 4 bar loop over 15/20mins and have to go back by hand and input midi to humanize... hoping to use this as a 'live' hardware version of something like Jamstix that either of us can control when we want builds/drops.

A stupid person's guide for how to reassign midi note output values would be really appreciated by this stupid person.

I know I can remap them in Logic or whatever but it would be really handy to do that at source. I'd love to hook this up directly to my Nord Drum but the default mapping for that uses the first six notes of C major starting at C4.

Thanks McKenic. I found that once you've got a basic loop going there's a lot of variation to be had just with the range and midpoint controls which affect the velocity of the hits. The jazz brush drums in Battery that I used has a lot of velocity controlled multi samples which I think accounts for the organic feel of the track I posted and most of the variety in that track is just me altering these two controls for the the 4th or 8th bar in the loop. I'm trying to think of how I can translate this into my eurorack as it seems like the velocity is definitely one of the easiest ways to introduce variety without radically affecting the basic loop.

Send him an email, when I asked about custom samples I explained to Matt that I haven't got a clue about coding and he replied that there would be a video tutorial for dummies like me (he didn't call me a dummie, those were my words).

Absolutely excellent! Thanks for sharing - this is exactly as I hoped.

We do a kind of minimal *shudder* Math-Rock / Dirty Three kind of thing so the thoughts of either of us reaching for a midi controller to adjust the intensity/spread of hits for build-ups and quieter parts is WONDERFUL! Going to give it a try with Battery today!

Thanks for the inspiration!
