Gear That Ought To Be Cloned

Post by Voltcontrol » Mon Nov 23, 2020 6:03 am

Sometimes you run across a piece of gear that'd be great for your setup, but has no contemporary counterpart.

So an homage/clone would be great! (or if a comparative device does indeed exist, feel free to correct the ignorance.

I'd llke to see the Midiman MicroMixer return.

The Arturia Keystep was a classic, but used examples are just so expensive now. If only some handsome and youthful hero could clone it.

Seriously though but, I’d pay 300 euro for a Behrpoo Box. I’d buy two of them.

Korg PS- series. Absolutely nothing else like then out there, extremely rare, and extremely cool.

I have, very cool, sounds nothing like a synthi and I just don't like the sound of it. It's certainly it's own thing.

This was my first instinct on seeing the topic but no doubt it would be too expensive for me still. Crumar Spirit clone would be neat as well.

Yes, this! Although if I was designing that clone, I'd give it per-channel inserts, put it on 1/8" jacks (because this is clearly for a tabletop/portable setup), and — true to the name — add midi control of all the knobs.

If you still don't like the sounds testing it I can understand. I came up for me not to judge gear by YouTube anymore. Hold of long time from buying the Hydrasys because of yt vids, even though STH kept telling me it has the feature set and interface I want. Glad I bought it and gave it a try; first patch instantly put a smile on my face knowing I made the right decision.
The Syntrex is really rich sounding to my ears and the basses/growls I get out of it put that smile on my face again. We live in good times synth wise

Even might look nice this time around if that render is any indication (but lacking space for stickers below the encoders {or overlays} is a weird change) A different manufacturer cloning it would be more oddly satisfying.

If Toppobrillo doesn't ever want to rerelease it, the Sport Modulator should be cloned by another quality manufacturer. I don't have one, but the videos I've seen of it got me quite interested. I've had notifications turned on for it, but at this point I've kind of given up on finding one on the used market; it seems I just missed the window of opportunity on that module, and I'm also afraid that it will go for exorbitant prices.

A module I do have is the SSF Utra-Random Analog. I am glad I got one on the used market because I don't know if SSF intends to start up a third round of production of the URA. Personally, I think it's a fine module.

Finally, as much as I love Soma Laboratories, I don't think they are going to upgrade the Lyra-8 themselves, and it is my belief the Lyra-8 should be upgraded in certain ways. Consequently, I think at this point some other company should clone the Lyra-8 and give the synth (1) stereo outputs with (2) individual CV ins per parameter, per channel and (3) individual outs per channel.

Additionally, perhaps make a version of the Lyra oscillator section, complete with modulation I/O of the oscillators, as a Eurorack module. Soma put out the Lyra-8 effects section as a module, so why not take the same approach with the rest?

I'm still waiting for someone to do a modern analog drum machine that isn't fundamentally an 808/909 clone. Give me some kind of ultimate combo of the Mini Pops line, or a CR-8000, or...anything else, please?
