Sequencing controller and MIDI LFOs

Post by SPIKE the Percussionist » Thu Jan 14, 2021 12:13 am

hey guys...
i need a bit of help with some hardware or possibly a software solution.

i'm really into using the MIDIpal MIDI LFOs for all sorts of generative sound and effect manipulation.

with the announcement of the BCR32 - https://www.gearnews.com/bcr32-behringe ... sequencer/ and there is the FaderFox SC4 - Sequencer and Controller - http://www.faderfox.de/sc4.html

what do you think of those two controllers for sending sequenced or generative CC messages?

also...
though i would be reluctant to use...but if its a good or best alternative...is there a plugin or software that would generate lots of MIDI LFOs?

thanks for any info and help!

Yorick Tech LTD's Low Frequency Expander (LFE) is a brilliant addition to a CC-synth ... yet to try it's more focused role with a DSI ...

i have both (zaq & SC4) and i haven't delved into the generative possibilities of the Faderfox (didn't know they were there)
also, since the ZAQ will create 2 midi cc per track with a wealth of tuning possibilities i didn't have to (get into those of the SC4)
since the setup/handling of both is a bit different they complement each other, but you also have to learn handling to different baby's

how many CC tracks will the ZAQ play simultaneously?

4 tracks x 2 MIDI cc each is 8

You know, I just remembered an old bit of kit I used to have that might interest you. Firstly, I must warn you i found it a bit of a pita to get my head around, but it does exactly what you’re looking for (I think). Behold, the bitstream 3x!

Anyone remember these? I sold mine years ago, but I used it live a few times with a laptop and some hardware and it does have masses of control, including lfos and cc’s.

holy frack!
that thing looks awesome!

do you remember how many MIDI LFOs it could generate simultaneously?

You're welcome! I can't remember how many lfos it came do simultaneously, it's been a while. it also has programmable arps, you can perform and save sequences of CC modulations with the controllers, loads of stuff that i haven't seen in other controllers. It's powerful. But it is a pig of tool to work with, shame it wasn't more intuitive. They go for around 200-250 these days i think. There's a detailed write up online via Sound on Sound of your want to find out more.

Cable guys is for me the most fun you can have with utility software. Again it's been a while so i don't know what all the different editions are these days, but there used to be a limited time trial version so maybe you can try it out. This is one of those things I wish existed in the hardware world.

yeah!
i use four MIDIpal boxes at any given time.
i would like a box with 16 or 32 MIDI LFOs that has multiple MIDI outputs.

That’ll need software then I guess. I just looked around to remind myself about the bitstream, there is only one LFO. However there are 8 motion sequencers that you could use as LFOs in a limited way, and only up to to 4 measures

Great choice :tu: Have fun with it, although having said that, it’s almost impossible not to!
