Here is another demonstration. This time it's 10 dry sounds on parade, hopefully showcasing more of the SE80's character:

Yep , these still sound fantastic every time I hear them. I really want that cs80 filter , the add on sound interesting too.

Wish Nick had got hold of the Korg filter, wonder why they didn't send him that, the Moog has been out a while ?

I do love Nick. He's a genuinely enthusiastic chap, without artifice or smuggery. He makes me want a Boomstar even more. You can practically see him struggling to keep reviewing rather than going into a wiggle frenzy.

After going through nearly every demo on soundcloud and youtube I could find, still having trouble picking one.

Strongly leaning toward the 3003. If anyone in this thread owns one, would greatly appreciate some really gnarly, grimy, acid demos. :ninja:

I got to play on 4 of them over the weekend and liked the 2600 and SEM the best. Its a shame they arent all $700 they would more than likely sell way more.

The Moog version sounds amazing! One small gripe, looks like none of the pots are secured to the panel. There's a lot of wiggle in them in the Sonic Lab review :despair:

Definitely on my radar now.

I just got this, love it already. Video has a backing track, limiter and delay, souncloud only the limiter.

I will maybe make a few more, I will ditch the limiter for the pure version then, this time this was just a brainfart.

I am seriously looking at buying 4 of them but wondered if I should just get The Moog or Arp versions and get the other filters in euro

Well any sub 1K synth would sell more if it were $200 cheaper. Sounds like you picked the 2 I have. They're definitely a nice tandem, but I can see any combo of these would be.

is there any specific reason in your opinion of the only Boomstar that show up as BStock or Retoured are the SEM one?

(both at thomann and musicstore here in EU)

does they do no sounds really good or have specific issue or it's just casuality ?

i am a bit thorned between CS80, SEM (both have multi-filter, but SEM has LP/HP control...) and ARP....

what do you prefer ?

Nice work Taika Kim, that sounds good :tu: You tamed it quite well in that track, which I know goa calls for. A lot of people can't keep their hands off the distortion controls, but you managed quite well.

I can only speak for the SEM and 4075, but the 4075 will give you more deep bass. Though I would say if you're not super particular about your bass, the SEM will give you nice bass and lots of versatility with the filter. And definitely don't think of this as an Oberheim, because it's not. Sounds to me like you want the SEM  Go with your gut attraction.

The wiggle has nothing to do with the pots, they are bolted to the panel.

Yep, the pots feel rock solid on my Boomstars.

It probably feels like a tough decision, but you'll ultimately have to pick one and go with it. Or pick a couple like me :hihi: Why don't you just get the SEM (unless you really want the vocally sounds the SE80 does), it seems like the most versatile of them all. They all have their own character for sure. It's like getting Ice Cream, so many choices, but you have to forgo trying the other flavors if you want to enjoy some ice cream. I think people when selecting what Boomstar they want get too caught up in what they might miss out on. Really it's what you hear online. I'd like a 3003 and may get one someday, but I know what it can do. So if I need that sound, I know where to buy it. So don't worry about missing out on some magical flavor. You know what they sound like and since you can't afford all of them, pick one and be confident with the choice and have fun with it. Seriously there's no wrong choice. Don't think you'd regret any of them. Here's my whole take:

All of them can give you punchy bass, leads and fx.

4075: Very solid delicious steak and potatoes choice. Lots of deep bass with the 24db filter.

5089: Extra Boomy sounding bass. We all know this. That's what Moogs do, right.

3003: Very chirpy filter. Different 303 flavor that can be heard online in demos. 24db filter so also great for bass.

SEM: Not intended to be an Oberheim, but definitely the most versatile of the Boomstars. It's a Jack of All Trades synth. 12db filter gives you HP,BP, and LP.

SE80: 12db filter with HP and LP. Gives you vocally sounds easily and acidic basses and leads. This and the 3003 seem to be the acid synths.

700: It's not out yet, but it has LP and HP filters like the Korg 700S. Seems to also have an acidic side to it. Very cool Boomstar being that no one seems to have done this filter on a synth before, so this could be new territory. We don't know yet. Stay tuned for this one.

I have the Boomstar SEM and I think it sounds fantastic. Perhaps some people returned it because they thought they were buying a SEM clone? Maybe some people did not realize that the SEM filter does not self-oscillate and they wanted a synth that has a 4 pole filter instead of a 2 pole? Or maybe there were more SEM modules made than others originally. Who knows. It is possible that there is just one B-stock unit that is sitting at a single distributor and both stores are pointing at it; that can happen.

Moer 4075 tweaks, altough the mixes are a bit busy and mixed with the room sound so it's not so distinct all the time:

Bump!

So I'm looking for a 'last' mono for my live setup. I currently have a Minitaur and a Sub Phatty and need something that complement them well. Whatever I get needs to be as thick/massive sounding as the Moogs, while also having a slightly different flavor. So…lush, but with the ability to go crazy and harsh when I want it to. The Boomstars look like they might fit the bill and the demos lead me to believe they'd be able to hang. Thinking about picking up the ARP filter model after I sell off some other gear, but I wish I had the ability to actually try one out first.
Any thoughts on this? I've tried so many monos and they're never quite what I'm looking for, would be nice if I could actually nail it on this one! :tu:

Long recording of tweaks from a 4075, maybe I´ll edit this later, but downloads are enabled so use freely, I let the sounds play for a while and resisted too fast changes so I will have something useful later for myself for cutting up and so on :)

No external MIDI/ audio, it´s just feedback, oscillator modulations, beating and ENV2 LFO sync going crazy.

Now the Soundcloud embedding does not seem to work, here's the plain link:

Just joined the Boomstar club with a 3003
In shipment as we speak
Once I am able to take a break from it I can post demos if anyone wants

It seems like one of the very few fixed synths to have a 'modular' quality to the tone, I will likely never buy another mono after this :miley:
