Just bought a Prophet 12 module, and digging through the old comments-can't believe how negative folks are on this. Seems like people who actually owned one really like it? I used to own an SQ-80/ESQ-1 and didn't mind the interface that much--this seems way more hands-on. Most of the stuff you would perform with is immediately available, and then you press a button and get four more parameters to twiddle. I'm not sure how that counts as "menu diving". Anyway, it seems like this is a really great synth for film-scoring/designing sounds and is remarkably portable. I'm not sure what's so bad about it? I guess it helps that the price is so low now. I got mine for $1,000 even.

I thought the UI looked pretty good as well. I also really like the ESQ-1 UI, and love the Elektron UI/work flow so I guess preferences really do vary a lot. I'm at the point where I will take 6-8 knobs/encoders and a clean page system over knob per function any day.

Seems like this one would be a good buy these days. Unfortunately the only demos I can seem to find are cheesy harpsichord patches and your usual slew of synth wave sounds.

I really like Bob Swan’s YouTube preset demos.

Yeah, I felt the same way, but then again a lot of the prophet 6 demos were not great either. Something clicked for me when I was flipping through the channels at my folks house when my wife and I went to visit for christmas. I saw this documentary about the making of Death Stranding and I saw a little prophet 12 module in the sound designer's studio along with a deckard's dream. It made me curious, so I started looking it up and thinking about sound design. Anyway, I already have/love the character module, and I've been wanted something with the flexibility of eurorack but really portable/polyphonic/with patch recall. The 12 starting making sense in the context, but you're right, there any many demos that really shot its capabilities.

Yeah, on paper it looks capable of some really creative sounds.

I still have my P’12 KB. I wish it had the architecture of the Pro-2 (dual filter path and modulation sequencer) but it is a fine synth nonetheless.

I thought about replacing it with a module but the module just doesn’t appear to have the same workflow.

I really like the module. I have it tucked away out of reach & just operate it from the DAW, using the Soundtower editor. It works well.

Would anyone be interested in a preset pack for this? I'm finding I can emulate a lot of older synths I love like the ESQ-1 with this and have also come up with interesting Alan Howarth-style "sound design" patches for it. I was thinking of making 100 or so presets and selling it fairly cheap-with a youtube demo. I've bought one before for the Matrix 6, because it's interface makes programming a bit hard and got to thinking that I might do that for a synth a really get along with, but doesn't have the most hands-on interface, ie. the prophet 12 module.

I have an OB-6....been eyeing the prophet 12 for very long time, but tbh...very few demos make me want to buy it.

I know it's a deep synth, and when I watch a youtube video, I judge more of programmer skills than the synth, but still...

Can you post a demo showing some great great programming patches? Or a video/demo that convinced you buying it?

I agree the demos are pretty crappy. I bought it because I trust DSI and really wanted a hands on digital after trading away my SQ-80 (which wasn't super hands on, but still). Anyway, I saw the specs and had the character module, so I knew some of the sounds it could create. Anyway, I love digital hybrids and knew I could get interesting tones out of it (also knew what the filters sounded like from the prophet 8 I used to own and the distortion from my prophet 6). I'll post a demo of some of the stuff I've made with it. Great for sound design.

I’ve been thinking of acquiring a P12m again. Looking at the UI for the first time it’s hard to imagine how easy it is to use and what it can be capable of.

It's not so much an instant gratification from init patch synth, although I think a lot of the presets are great. When I first tried one, I was also considering a virus TI, and I went with the virus. Later got a p12m and now the virus is gone...

What convinced me to give the p12 a second chance was a soundcloud demo where some guy had programmed a really good solina patch. And I figured if a hybrid synth can do such a convincing 70s string machine then there was more to it than I had given it credit for.

The architecture makes most any kind of sound possible, which means there is a lot in there to consider when programming and you've got to be familiar with both it's architecture and it's parameter ranges to translate a sound in your head to a sound in the machine, but it's there. And once it's programmed up, it is an excellent performance machine even the module version.

The other new polys in its price range to consider would be the modor nf-1 and the rev2

I think part of the problem is that, especially when it came out, for the price, it almost had to do everything and be your only poly. Since I have a Prophet 6, I am not really concerned about how it performs as an analog poly. I think it's pretty good at that, but the thing I love is being able to program all of this digital sounds I loved from a variety of old hardware. Just to give you an example: the other day I was playing an old DOS game and I was getting nostalgic for the kind of simple FM sounds those games have (and also that sample-rate reduced sound), so I decided to see how well I could emulate it. Granted, these are simple sounds, but with the sample rate reduction and linear FM, I very quickly had three perfect FM sounds for recreating those old soundblaster FM cards. The day before I built this immense drone that sounded a bit like didgeridoo and throat singing mixed with a Xenkis-esque string section. Then the next day I built some early 00s "super saw" patches. A week ago, I made a patch that sounds like a Sunn0)))) record. The first date I got it, I was able to recreate strings from my Ensoniq Mirage. Today, I made a recreation of Akira Yamaoka's piano sounds from Silent Hill.

Again, all on the same machine. I think as long as you don't treat it like an analog synth, you can get really interesting stuff.

Does it have flaws? Yes.

Here are a list of issues I've run into from most important to least

The "Hack" parameter is ill-conceived. There's just no way around it. I don't know why they didn't make a better sounding/more flexible bit crusher. Listen to a Malgorithm and you can hear the difference. It immediately jumps on full blast at 8 and then mildly increases from there up to the 150 or whatever the full on message is. It seems like a wasted opportunity. There are some scenarios where it works, but a nice bit crusher would have made this an even more flexible machine.

The filter doesn't sound good as analog filter. Yes, you can make it sound good, but it's really bland. I am actually willing to give it a pass on this machine, because I think of the filter as more of a tone shaper than anything that has it's own character. It is great to building sounds in conjunction with the "character" section. BTW, this was also true on my ESQ-1.

I wish there were more wavetables. What they have is usable, but it just seems needlessly small

I wish the "retriggering" envelopes didn't require a note on, and could function more properly as LFOs. Maybe I'm missing something here, but yeah, I wish when you set envelopes to re-trigger they were just free-running, so that I could use them as extra modulation in drone patches (especially since when I'm making drones with the desktop version, I'm not necessarily using a keyboard).

Also, it would be nice (at least on the module version where the controls are less immediate) to have some sort of preset for the effects section that could be reused. There are certain basic configurations which would be useful to reuse (synced delay, tape, reverb, chorus, etc.).

To me these are not fatal flaws, and personally, it's a best of both worlds synth that can do a lot of the things I do in euro, but with easy recall, so that I gig with it. It also has changed my composition process so that I can separate creating a sound from composing in a way that I couldn't with euro.
