Ableton 11 supposedly runs on Win 10...still on 7 here. Rock solid and not particularly looking forward to go through the upgrade hassle...

That said, 7 hit EOL exactly a month ago, so you may need to consider it anyway, annoyingly.

The MPE support with the CV tools make live 11 the perfect daw for hooking up to my modular. I can record my roli with the Expert sleepers FH2 in clips. I probably won’t be using any audio in it. Just a good sequencer with silent way ES3 clocks

You're right! ...but it's strictly a music computer, no internet or updates whatsoever.

Windows 7 EOL was over a year ago. I'm in same boat. My Win 7 PC is rock solid. But I'm finally being pushed to build a new PC for this Ableton update.

My two main high spec’d music PCs ran XP Win back when I bought them and they ran great through all the upgrades to Win10. YMMV, but my 12 year old PC is doing fine with Win10 (I keep looking for excuses to buy a new one, but it’s solid).

Maybe clone the drive before upgrading in case you find you want to go back?

Win10 in my case was better than 7 on exactly the same PC. Mainly faster. So Don't be too afraid upgrading.

Yeah. Apparently it's not 2020 after all. Pandemic has done a real number on my macro time perception ;)

I complained when ableton was selling upgrade licenses for $399 from 9 suite to 10 suite. maybe they read this forum because today I see that I can upgrade from 9 to 11 for $199. twice the upgrade, half the price. this also kinda proves that $399 every year for top tier customers is taking the piss.

Suite 9 to 10 wasn't $399. It was around 200 euro.

ah ok probably it was that I have 8 suite and they would not let me do the upgrade for $199. they wanted $399. now when I login it says $199 upgrade. maybe you didn't notice it because you didn't have 8 suite when 10 was released?

apparently I already upgraded to 9 suite a while ago. so yes they did try to charge me $399 for an upgrade on launch day.

It was an extra 20% off until yesterday for the upgrade. I’m sure they’ll do it again at some point.

I preordered but didn’t get my invoice for payment yet. Maybe they’re slowly rolling it out to avoid crashing the servers.

Went ahead and installed 11 as well. So far so good! I already really like the probability additions. I'll probably keep 10 installed until I'm confident my old projects work in 11 without issue.

Runs well on my old MacPro. CPU handling is the same as 10 which was the same as 9, which compared to Bitwig is fine, but compared to Reaper is a joke.
PDC still not sorted...I mean...its 2021 Ableton...sort it out...
No multiple audio region editing, hopefully that will come...would be great if they added Reaper's item trim gain, or per item/region FX inserts.

The new reverb is pretty amazing. Same for the new modulation/time effects. The added MIDI stuff is brilliant. Comping, yes, very nice to have.
MPE I am indifferent for as I don't have any MPE synths so I don't know what I am missing/ignorance is bliss.
The new plug ins are brilliant though.

NativeKontrol (3rd-party) ClyphX Pro and other Python2-dependent scripts are broken with no announcement from developer.

I think you can also code them in lua. ableton actually announced that all these scripts would work in future versions of live.

https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/artic ... te-scripts
Note:
We do not provide technical support or assistance for third-party remote scripts. If you run into any problems with them please get in touch with the developer directly.

As of Live 10.1.13, it is possible to create a “Remote Scripts” folder in the User Library where you can add your third-party remote scripts. These scripts will then appear in Live's Preferences under Link/MIDI.

Note:
Any remote scripts placed in this folder will be loaded in all future Live versions as well.

Honest question. What am I missing with Ableton?

I have Live 10. Got my friend’s extra. Had some fun making weird beats. But once I realized there was no comping takes I lost all interest.

I get the layout as being very different than Logic, which is my DAW I’ve used the most. But other than the ability to see/play sections at the touch of a button, what would you say your favorite thing about it is?

I’m guessing it’s mostly to do with using it as a sequencing platform for all your gear? And that I get. And am intrigued by.

I’ve got a Mutant Brain in the mail. And I’m planning on working diligently in the next few months on incorporating my Elektron stuff more fully with my Eurorack.

How much easier does Ableton make that? Or doesn’t it?

I’ve always strayed away from needing a laptop present to play with my Eurorack/Elektron stuff. And spent a bunch of money on sequencing in that pursuit. Time to bite the bullet?

Or is Ableton merely a “you either like it or you don’t”/“it’s whatever you learned to record on” preference thing that isn’t as much of a must as I tell myself it is for recording electronic based music?

Live 11 has comping, something other DAWs have had for ages, but now its on Live 11, so its a big thing for Ableton users.
I switched from Logic to Ableton because I am using lots of hardware sequencers and want to create and record a part and play it back, whilst the DAW is looping, without any hickups that misalign my sequencers.

I also have a Mutant Brain and use it both to send MIDI from my Octatrack but also my DAW. Its very easy to set up.
In terms of flexibility and writting ideas down, Ableton is for me, the best.
I also tried Bitwig and liked that, but I prefer the plug ins included with Live 11, which are awesome.

The problem with Ableton (and every other DAW) is when you use Reaper and see what proper CPU management feels like, at 60bucks and with a DAW that will run on any OS, so you don't have to chase OS updates.

Other than that, Live is brilliant and I am getting a MacMini M1 soon so I can continue using Ableton Live as my old cheese grater is more than happy to run lots of plugs in Reaper, but Ableton is terrible at CPU handling.

Ableton is excellent at reducing the amount of samples in RAM and CPU if you deactivate or mute a track or sample. If you freeze a track then it renders the sounds of the plugins and unloads them automatically. Ableton does load enough of the beginning of every sample into RAM so that you get almost zero delay when you trigger playback of a song or clip. This may seem like it requires more RAM but there is a reason for it that makes it perfect for live DJ performance and it offsets this RAM hungry philosophy by streaming everything after the buffer from disk. It is the best of both worlds. If you don't want your samples partially buffered in RAM you can mute them. The mute button is also the RAM button. You can limit CPU usage on windows by setting the priority and CPU affinity. You have complete control over everything.

The best part of ableton is ableton suite and max4live. Regular ableton is missing the point in my opinion. Having a unified user interface that is context aware makes work very efficient and pleasant. When you use mostly ableton instruments, you can make instrument racks that have controls instantly visible in the proper place when that track is selected. Using 3rd party samplers like kontact or browsers like komplete makes everything less perfect as far as organization and efficiency. If you like komplete then you should stay in cubase or maschine. You can use it if you want to but that just negates the benefits of starting over %100 inside of ableton with samples organized in ableton. I don't think anything in ableton is unique but having it all in one tightly integrated package is extremely unique and valuable. Maschine comes close for integration but it falls short with big flagship DAW features that the other DAW's have. My only complaint with ableton is that warp is still short of more high quality time stretching algorithms like Izotope RX for example. For drums only tracks this is no problem but for high quality final track time stretching I can do better with something else.

Simpler/sampler was a game changer when I started on live 8. The features saved me a lot of time compared to making wave files with looping tails in fruity loops or even sound fonts .sf2 if we go back to the 90's. Extract groove was also pretty amazing. This is like proppellerheads recycle but so much faster. It was like seconds compared to 15 minutes. The clip launcher is hiding a programmable algorithmic probableistic sequencer. Everything they do is ahead of everything else for DJ style production. Cubase is definitely a competitor. There are things that cubase does that are also unique and cutting edge. But no DAW does everything so you have to decide what is most important for you. Reaper is closer to protools than anything else. I don't think you can compare it to ableton.
