Collection of Favorite Free Devices - Max for Live

Post by isosceles » Sun May 12, 2019 8:47 pm

I’ve been exploring the huge archive of free devices over at maxforlive.com and around the web. At some point I started keeping notes for myself about what each device was useful for. And then this document started needing categories... And next thing I know, here is an epic list documenting what I personally feel are some of the most well designed, interesting, and wild devices that are available for free.

All devices have been confirmed working in Ableton Live 10. I’ve found much inspiration here and hope you enjoy this treasure trove.

hanks for sharing. Wading through all the stuff on maxforlive.com is tedious.

l like the sound of this one:
eCo (and eCo-M) - https://gumroad.com/l/hhgKy

A simple, clever CPU saving device. As opposed to native Live devices, 3rd party plugins and M4L devices always consume CPU even when idling... eCo solves that. eCo is placed before the target cpu-angry device. When a signal enters eCo, the target device is instantly powered on. When the track's volume reaches -inf, the target device gets automatically powered off by eCo.

Yes, great stuff, thanks!

Anybody here tried using M4L stuff inside Max as a way of allowing other DAWs into the party?

Full Max standalone can load .amxd files into the editor, kinda like BEAP.

(Max For Live can't, ironically. It is one of Max standalone's advantages, together with Gen and MC.)

Of course, devices that are specific for Live functions are kinda useless.

But MIDI sequencers, synths and audio FX are usable and quite nice.

Also, Max For Live objects like live.step are quite useful in Max.

Shameless plug, but has anyone seen the ELPHNT video series on cool, free M4L devices?

They're pretty solid and he does a good job explaining a lot of them.

I'd recommend the convolution reverb as well, use any impulse response to get great sounding reverbs.

https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/convolution-reverb/

It's included in ableton live suite 10, so not entirely free :(
