miRack for iOS - now available

Post by CF3 » Sat Sep 14, 2019 4:37 pm

Came across this post:

http://mifki.com/blog/mirack-is-coming-to-ios/
...... Only recently I fixed the error, redone the tests and started porting miRack to iOS.

Now the work is done, and miRack will soon be available on the App Store.
:woah:

A version of “VCV Rack” on an ipad would be amazing!

If anybody has anymore info on this I’d love to hear it.

:guinness:

There’s a rolling thread over on the Audiobus Forum, with the developer answering questions. It’s currently in beta.

Hey CF3 - does it say anywhere what iPad he is testing with? I'm just looking at that cpu meter.

I believe it was a 6th Gen (2018???). There was a beta tester over on the Audiobus forum that was using an older ipad, and didn’t seem to be having any trouble. Supposedly it’s being optimized to run better.

Version 1.0 of miRack is finalised and here’s what it will have
September 17, 2019
Module packs (with number of modules): Audible Instruments (16), Autodafe (2), Autodafe Drums (2), Befaco (7), Bogaudio (70), cf (23), Stochasm (1), ESeries (1), Frozen Wasteland (17), Fundamental (18), Impromptu Modular (15), JW (14), Koralfx (7), Mental (25), mscHack (25), MSM (8), Squinky Labs (15), SynthKit (13).

VCV Rack users should be familiar with all of these module packs, others can follow the links to see what they contain.

Core MIDI input and background audio. You can connect a hardware MIDI controller or another iOS app. MIDI works the Eurorack way - instead of assigning MIDI controls directly to knobs and sliders, you use one of the MIDI input modules and wire it to CV inputs of other modules.

What to expect in the first updates (bug fixes take precedence of course):

More modules. The modules listed above is just the first batch

Multitouch support. Currently you can simultaneously operate only one on-screen module control.

Audio recording module / IAA / Audio Bus support. This is the most requested feature and I'm investigating the possibilities of getting audio out of miRack without compromising its performance.

Multichannel audio output. Currently only stereo output is available but adding more channels is planned and requested for interfacing with Eurorack modules like ES-8.

Known issues:

VU meter doesn't work in Befaco Spring Reverb module.

Bogaudio Analyzer XL module doesn't work in some cases, use non-XL Analyzer module instead.

Working pretty good here. Obviously needs more inter-app features, but that’s coming supposedly. It functions and runs really good so far (I’m on an iPad Air 2). Haven’t really tried to push it too hard yet though. Even got it being sequenced from my Cirklon straight away.

Pretty awesome for the initial release :cloud:

Slightly off topic, but related question.

How many voices could you sequence with the cirklon on the ipad? Is there a limit of midi channels the vcv can process or can you keep adding in midi modules until the cpu is used up?

Technically, the Cirkon has 6 unique USB MIDI busses. So in theory I could have 96 MIDI channels. I sincerely doubt my current ipad could get anywhere near that amount of channels without locking up. I’ve successfully done about 16 individual instruments/apps before thru AUM, and that was really pushing it.

Not sure on the limit of MIDI inside miRack/VCV? I’ve definitely done at least 8 channels before. Along with CC automation.

This miRack release is just the push I need to go get a new iPad :moneyburn:

Got it! Yes instant buy here!

Is there a manual?

I cant seem to delete modules and edit modules preferences (randomise, reset, etc)

This could be a killer with ableton link integration!

Cheers

try tapping with two fingers on the module, a context menu should appear

I’ve spent a couple of hours with this - so far so good.

Works well with an Apple Pencil on an iPad Pro 10.5 - though it takes a bit of getting used to two finger drags to navigate, plus pencil to operate, plus the occasional unexpected movement of a module.. I hope to find out how to adjust the touch sensitivity, ideally with a response curve - as turning a pot full range sometimes means lifting the pencil and repeating the drag on the screen. Zooming isn’t super smooth, but it’s good enough.

If this has regular updates like VCV, I reckon I’d persuade myself to get a larger iPad.

Fab port of vcv rack, really darn good and will only get better. Love having mutable instruments on my iPad. Also just using mutable modules allows me to focus on the simple things.

One thing, if someone can help: maybe I’m blind but where is the audio in module ? And what is back ground audio? Probably obvious but I’m not really a Mac person, ha.

So stoked to see this! One question though ... is it possible to 'stack' multiple cables like you can with say the Nord Modular editor (trying to cut down on clutter with multiples)?
