Substantia - Physical Modelling Lab

Post by Tobor » Sat Apr 18, 2020 11:34 am

Substantia (latin: substance), is an electroacustical physical modelling laboratory with hundereds of models. It is a modal synthesis software with integrated euclidean sequencer and recorder.

There are around 50 sound synthesis techniques out there, the vast majority of which is digital based. Modal synthesis is an important form of physical modelling synthesis, which in the last years, with the implementation in the modular world, has gained a certain popularity.
The vast majority of modal synthesis tools, so far, have a limited number of options and models. Some tools give you just inharmonicity and dumping controls over a bank of resonators, some other offer few models like a pipe, a plate, a box, and usually a very small selection of materials: metals, plastic, wood…

Substantia instead has 17 different models and 23 materials, ranging from Aluminium to Nickel, Glass, Marble, Sapphire, Platinum, Gold, Nylon, Uranium Oxide and more, for a total of 391 resonant models. (The list will grow with updates).
For unparalleled precision, Substantia uses 100 Resonant Band Pass filter for each voice, for a total of 800 filters (8 voice polyphony).
You can excite the resonators with contact microphones (2 for stereo sound are better), samples, or white noise and experience a new exciting way to make digital sounds with human gestures. Substantia is a powerful tool to create new hyper-real sounds, from amazing bongos to luxurious glassy and metallic textures. A must have for experimental musicians, lovers of new frontiers of sound.

RELEASE: APRIL 19th 2020, h12.00 Central European Time.

Very cool, thanks. Good to have a modal synthesis package, and it looks well thought out and easy to use.

It looks like it will be available here:

https://www.giorgiosancristoforo.net/softwares/

…but the "buy now" button isn't showing up yet.

(not that I'll be buying anything for a while due to all of my music working drying up due to the current global health crisis).

I don't get to the software side of muffwiggler often, so I decided I'd take a spin through it this morning and I'm glad I did. Based on the freakin' fantastic contact mic demo above, I just picked this app up. This one was so cool that I went through the rest of his stuff and also grabbed Quadrivium and Fantastic Voyage. So far they've all been a blast to play with, although I'll have to wait until my contact mics arrive next week to get the full Substantia experience. :sb:

LOL, I can't even recall how many times this has happened to me. I'll have crap in my plugin boutique cart and it'll tell me "you already have this plugin". It's an addiction I tell ya. Glad I could help.
