ES-9 Stopped loading

Post by Monocle » Thu May 21, 2020 7:06 pm

I began to experience the strange behavior of my ES-9.
At system startup, ES-9's first LED is only blinking now, and my system doesn't see it.
But when I run DFU util I'm able to reinstall the firmware and after reinstallation es-9 restarts itself and became available.
So the only way to make it work it's to reinstall firmware on each startup, which seems to me not very reasonable.
Tried downgrade from 1.1.1. to 1.0.1 - basically the same result.
I will be grateful for any help

How strange. It clearly has a good USB connection, since you can run the DFU tool.

Could it be a case power issue? Could you remove a module or two and see if that makes any difference?

I tried to put it in the second (almost empty) Tiptop Mantis case - no difference,
only the first led is blinking and no connection.

Are you able to try it with a different computer or iOS device?

Yes, tried to plug into another mac 10.14.3 - no connection.
Actually both machines are showing ES-9 DFU in USB devices but nothing else.

The ES-9 has a jumper header on the PCB to force loading into DFU mode. Could you inspect that for damage/lint/anything suspicious?

Don't seeing anything suspicious on/around jumper, visually no shortenings.

So how I understood, ES-9 now is force booting in DFU mode?

Can't see that image, sorry. You don't need to use google drive. You can just upload the image here.

Could you use the USB Prober on it? viewtopic.php?p=2979375#p2979375

Thanks. I'm not sure what to suggest. Everything seems to be working OK, it's just that the firmware isn't "sticking" when you update it, so when it boots again it thinks it has no firmware installed.

You could try firmware 1.1.2 but I don't expect that to make any difference.

Thank you, tried 1.1.2 gives the same result as 1.1.1 looks like firmware does not affect the behavior.
True, firmware isn't saving after the system is turned off,
since now it's now always booting in the DFU mode.

Could you have an extra close look at R16 on the board, near the jumper? Use a magnifying glass if you have one.

Just trying to find a solution other than returning or repairing it, which will cost money in postage & result in you being without the module for a while. There isn't much stock around so just replacing it might be hard.

Sure, I would also prefer to try fix it on my end, really hope that this is possible.
Tested R16 it with the multimerer - it's showing 10k no ringing.
Are there any other guesses that can be checked?
I have capacity tester and regular multimeter, if it helps somehow to debug the problem.

Could you measure the voltage across R16, as the power is applied? Should be zero.

Yes looks like there are 2,86v across R16.
Please check my scribbles, I hope that it makes sense.

Well that would explain it. What you've labelled as pin 3 is supposed to be pulled to 0V by R16. A jumper on JP1 pulls it high and forces the DFU boot.

If pin 3 is floating high, then either there's a tiny short across JP1 or thereabouts, or the MCU is broken.

Tested JP1 and there are no shorts, it seems.
Also, I tried to connect JP 1 left pin to the ground (used ES-5's bottom pin connector),
and that drained all the voltage from pin 3, it became 0V according to my multimeter.
Still no luck, MCU continues to boot in DFU mode for some reason.
Any other ideas?
