Disting Mk4 - I1 delayed

Post by Umcorps » Mon Dec 30, 2019 7:54 am

I've been copying over some files from Radio Music to my Disting micro card for use in I1 algo.

Obviously some of these files are very large, long duration WAVs. They are organised in different folders according to type.

What I'm finding is that it takes ages - like several minutes - to switch between folders before the files become accessible for playback. There are a couple of folders on the card that are alphabetically before the RM folder set that have much shorter WAVs in them. Moving between those with the encoder is near instant. But when I move from the last one of them to the first RM folder, the screen goes blank (or occasionally just has one dot lit) and then I have the long wait before I can access the files or anything else on the module.

First few times this happened I thought my Disting had hung.

Is this expected behaviour? I'm on 4.14 firmware using a "normal" SD card (ie not fast enough for the SD delay algos). The folders have the appropriate playlist-rm file in them and, once the long wait ends, everything works as it should.

The disting can take a long time to scan WAVs if they have metadata (e.g. cue points), which typically goes at the end of the file, so it has to scan all the way through.

If you don't need the metadata, strip it out, and see if that helps.

They don't have any metadata that I can see.

They're too big to post here.

I've put an example here instead https://www.dropbox.com/s/hb93fmhcfc9mz ... v.zip?dl=0

That one doesn't have metadata, which is not to say the others don't.

The others in the folder are the same - none of them have metadata but take several minutes to index or whatever. But this one is the shortest file in there.

On checking the files in the other folder that takes an age to become active I see that a lot of them have title metadata so I'll strip that out. They are all much shorter - a few minutes at most - but there are 30 of them.

OK. I can't see any way of debugging this other than you sending me the whole folder worth of files.

Let me strip out the title metadata from the files in the other folder first and see if that makes a difference.

If its still a pain I'll send you that folder. The radio music files folder is huge and my upload speeds here are little better than dial-up. :bang:

Just to update, stripping out the rogue metadata in the smaller folder sorted the problem there.

Without metadata, the radio music folder remains a problem but as its got several Gb of files in there I guess I'll just have to live with it.

As a work around I've named that folder so its the last in the list which lets me get at all the others before it. When I want to access it I'll use the time put the kettle on.

It really shouldn't be a problem to have GB of files. I would like to debug this if we can.

You could send the files via wetransfer.com or similar?

Or if you got the files from elsewhere, let me know where and I'll download them.

The issue is with my upload speeds here. I'm not joking, it really is 0.6 Mbps on a good day. And it takes all my bandwidth even to do that so I can't use the downstream for anything useful until the upload is done. The unsung joys of country life.

I'll check out wetransfer and if I can I'll schedule an upload there overnight.

Thanks

Resolved

Turns out one of the files in the radio music folder had metadata that wasn't showing up in the editor I was using.

For future reference, I had originally prepped this file in Logic which had duly stamped the wav identifying itself in the originator data field. Even if you find a metadata editor that actually shows this info, its not usually available for editing for obvious reasons.

Os recommended a scary hex editor to deal with this but after a quick look I decided that was far too grown-up for me. So I kludged it.

Using Audacity I exported the file as RAW data and then reimported it and saved it back to WAV. Which stripped everything out.

And it all now works fine with no significant delays switching between folders.

This has been happening to me. How would I identify if a file has metadata in it?

[edit] I guess I didn't read the post above. I will try to export to raw and reimport it as a wav.

Which hex editor is recommended to strip metadata?

It's a pain to do in a hex editor. Better to use an audio file processing app.

Could scanning be disabled or enabled for specific directories from config file? Just so existing sound libraries could be used differently and not waste time with scanning when not called for.

You can make a top level playlist containing only the directories you want the disting to use.

Thanks.
Can you here tell what directories you know to have metadata but want to be ignored?
Or will playlist take priorety over metadata so you can use playlist as workaround?

Oh I see. There's no option to tell the disting not to scan metadata. I suppose I could add that.
