ES-9 & MIDI

Post by bennytom » Tue Jan 07, 2020 3:30 pm

Is it possible to send midi data from Ableton to my Eurorack setup with the ES-9? I want to be able to key in notes on Ableton and have them play from my Eurorack modules, just as you would with a standard midi hardware synth or a VST.

If it's not possible, how could I do it? what modules would I need etc?

Forgive me if this is a dumb q, I'm pretty new to Eurorack!

Cheers!

I should also add that midi wouldn't matter to me if I was somehow able to send note data from Ableton over CV to my Eurorack with the ES-9, enabling me to key in chords/notes on Ableton in standard midi clips and have them play on eurorack. I don't know if that's possible or not but yeah....

Yes, that's one of the primary purposes of the module. Used in conjunction with Silent Way, or Live's CV Tools, you can do exactly that.

Hello,

Back to the original topic, I would like to use the ES-9 with my ipad.
Use the es-9 input as an audio interface - and do the mix on the ipad - and use the midi breakout for sequencing with midi.
What I don't understand is, can I use the ES-9 output for CV (from midi note) out or do I need to plug the midi out from the breakout to another midi to cv module ?

in short, do I need another module than the ES-9 + midi breakout to do midi to cv sequencing.

Thanks !

You don't need another module, but you do need software on the iPad to convert MIDI to CV.

Ok, but what is the midi breakout for ?
if I plug a midi cable in the midi in and run a sequencer with a midi app on the iPad, do I get CV out on the es-9 ? Do it a t as a midi to CV converter ?

No, the ES-9 is not a MIDI/CV converter. The MIDI breakout is to provide MIDI i/o to your DAW.

Ok thanks !
So if I understood correctly. I can plug the midi out from the breakout to another midi to CV module and run the midi sequence by plugging the USB to the es-9.
The midi will be pass to the breakout to the midi to CV module.
Sounds great !

That will work, yes, but as I say if you do the MIDI/CV in software you can avoid having to have an additional module.

Thanks for taking time to explain :tu:

The problem is that there is almost no CV sequencer on iOS, mostly midi. That's why.

does it support polyphony? can silent way or cv tools sequence/play 8 notes which ES9 can send to play polyphony in the modular? thanks

Silent Way does polyphony - not sure about CV Tools.

CV tools doesn't atm but you can somewhat work around that.

Haven't tried it yet but my next plan is to use this hocketing device https://maxforlive.com/library/device/6431/hocket
Seems like a realatively easy way around it.

That being said, the more I try to avoid silent way (didn't gel so well with the UI), the more I realise it's so much more robust than CV tools.

Everyone with a DC coupled audio interface should buy Silent Way.

Take a look at the tools I've created (or hacked the standard CV Tools) for the ES expanders. I made one do 4 voice Polyphony on the ESX-8CV. Output 1 sends out Pitch, Output 2 sends out an envelope (you can modify for a gate). Give it a whirl if you have the expanders.
