ES-9, ES-5 and VCV Rack

Post by kooka » Thu Feb 06, 2020 5:58 am

What am I doing wrong here?

The ES-9 is working fine in Rack.

The ES-5 is connected to the ES-9 via the short ribbon. Jumpers are unchanged.

This is the VCV Rack patch I'm using to test.

https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ah2H3vV3CDnzjuAug1L ... Q?e=PfJfy1

An 8FO is connected to jacks 9-16 "To Device" of the Rack audio module. The physical ES-9 lights cycle through, responding to the LFOs from Rack as expected.

Jacks 7 & 8 "To Device" of the Rack audio module are connected to a Rack ES-5 module. Jack 1 of that ES-5 is connected to a Rack 8GT output.
I connect Clocked to an 8GT jack, and the physical ES-5 reacts as follows:

Rack 8GT Jack 1: no lights
Rack 8GT Jack 2: light 1 on
Rack 8GT Jack 3: lights 1 and 2
Rack 8GT Jack 4: lights 1,2,3
Rack 8GT Jack 5: lights 1-4
Rack 8GT Jack 6: lights 1-5
Rack 8GT Jack 7: lights 1-6
Rack 8GT Jack 8: light 8 only

The lights do respond to BPM and pulse width changes.

TIA

I would imagine you're seeing this: https://github.com/VCVRack/Rack/issues/1539

If I recall you can improve the behaviour by feeding an always-on signal into another of the ES-5 Encoder inputs. Or rebuild your own VCV from source code with the required fix :)

Thanks, that's workable for now. A constant voltage (>=1V) into jacks 2 or 3 of ES-5 seems to work. Putting voltage into 4-6 is ineffective.

Is there any progress on resolving this a better way? Am I going to hit problems with this when I add an ESX-8CV and an ESX-8GT? It would be nice to at least have it sorted out when Rack 2 releases soon.

As you'll see from the link, this is an issue with one of the libraries that Rack uses. It's entirely within their power for the VCV guys to branch that library and use a fixed version.

Was it reported as a bug to RTAudio?
