ES9 USB C socket dropping connection

Post by mr_karlos » Sat Feb 15, 2020 7:02 pm

Anyone else have a problem with the usb-c connection on the ES9?
I frequently lose the connection between my Mac and the ES9 when patching around the ES9 usb socket. The right hand led goes out monetarily if i touch the cable. Then I have to re-select the audio devices in Live.

Is this a problem with the device or maybe the cable. Any suggestions welcome.

Could be either. Have you tried reversing the USB C plug in the ES-9's socket?

Reversing the connections appears to work. The connection into the ES9 seems more reliable using the plug that was connected to the MacBook. Strangely the plug that was un-reliable on the ES9 appears reliable when plugged into the MacBook's USB-C socket.

I have other cables throughout the house. I'll try those later today.

I'm having this issue as well - tried 2 different cables, both USB C to USB A (and then adapter back to USB C) connected to Macbook Pro 2018. It happens with both cables, and also with different adaptors.

Next move must be trying a quality USB C-USB C cable. Maybe it just doesn't like adaptors generally...

Anyone have more info about this?

I am having a dropout issue as well (MacBook Pro on OSX 10.14.6) with multiple USB C to C cables, multiple USB C to A cables, and trying each of them through a USB C hub. I am running v1.1.1. I've reinstalled the firmware with the DFU a few times. Audio will run for maybe 10 minutes between dropouts, at best. Disconnecting/Reconnecting works. So does Deselecting/Reselecting in either System Preferences or in Ableton. 16 I/O appear normally in the Audio Devices, recognized as ES-9 not as an Aggregate device. The ES-9 is recognized and communicated with by the configurator tool as well.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Looking into this being an issue with Apple's T2 chip in my MacBook Pro 2019. In my mobile setup I'm using the ES9 but in my home studio setup I was using a Thunderbolt interface. It seems that the T2 chip performs sync services that quickly overload the USB2.0 bus, causing dropouts. So far seems like no resolution.. if I find a solution I'll update here.

@maxbobo that would be really infuriating if the problem is the T2... Bought this full specced MB Pro i9 for music production... :/ Sounds a lot like the same problem except the ES-9 takes a while and a few reboots/cable-reinsertions/etc. to show up in Ableton/System pref/etc. again.

Does the ES-9 run on USB 2.0? Seems weird to run 2.0 on USB C cable, right? Or am I wrong? :::EDIT::: I see from the ES site that it is indeed USB 2.0...

Thanks for sharing! Will try with my non touch-strip MB Pro! :)

Interestingly I wasn't having this problem on my iMac, but I've moved to a PC setup on Windows 10 with a straight USB-C to USB-C connection and the ES-9 regularly just disconnects or locks (without reconnecting) after about 10-15 minutes.

Going to try a USB-C to USB-A cable next and rotating as suggested here.

So I've tried flipping the cable to no avail.
It takes about probably 20 minutes for it to happen, on the 1.11 firmware.
Everything is working fine, audio is passing (although it takes a few tries to get the ES manager to talk to the ES and several midi port back and forth switching), then after about 20 minutes it just quits. Both USB lights are solid red-- if I take out the USB cable at this point, they just stay solid red.
However the jacks are still lighting up showing voltage coming to them.
Takes a full shutdown and restart of the rack to bring it back again.

idem :

last firmware / last driver

it's not only on ableton, when playing audio outside of the DAW too ...

Could it be an IRQ issue on usb/card reader/webcam/whatever else shared buses ? i recall my access virus had similar issues when connected to a non-TI usb chipset

not even patching things or touching the cable/laptop. i tried it like 10 times today, just letting medi player playing a wav file and it always disconects 10/20 mins after rebooting the rack

I reverted to 4.8.0 and still had the dropouts.

Any issue with maybe this being a USB3 USB-C port it's plugged into? This is also a Dell (Alienware) desktop with assumed Intel chipset for this. I imagine it isn't far from standard.

I can try and set the firmware back to the last version maybe and see how that does? Still having this happen as it is.

Any other ideas, os?

You could try this firmware 1.1.2:

Not expecting any difference but you never know.

There should be a new driver before long. Maybe that will help.

If you could let me know exact OS versions that are experiencing difficulties, that would be useful information.

I'm on Windows 10.0.18363. Today trying to plug into a straight USB 2.0 slot to see if anything is any different.

Appreciate the help!

I just recorded a single track for 24 minutes straight on a USB-C to USB 2.0 cable straight to a USB 2.0 port without it crashing in Live on ASIO with the latest driver you sent on the 1.1.2 firmware, so so far so good?
