ES-9 + Silent Way for Buchla 200e

Post by AlexHeld » Thu Feb 27, 2020 2:36 pm

Hi Os,

Im currently building a Hybrid Eurorack, Buchla and Digital (VCV, Reaktor and Max) Rig and will be having the ES-9 as my center piece to connect them all. (3.5 mm to Banana via a Low Gain Electronics ULT-1)
A few questions:
I have seen that the Silent Way plug in can calibrate a Buchla Oscillator, which expect 1.2 V/Oct instead of the Euro 1 V/Oct. However, i have read in several blogs and on Buchlas website that its dangerous for the Modules to send negative voltage. Its so cool that the ES-9 shows the output type of voltage, so for the Buchla CV, I`ll only put use positive (red) outputs. - But when calibrating the Buchla 259e with silent way, is there a way that the ES-9 outputs negative voltage? Im not so familiar with calibrating, so it would be great to know.

Also, I have seen in a different thread that it is possible to create Buchla pulses with Silent Way by combining the Gate and trigger signal. Could you tell me how this would be done for my (future) 281e?

And my last question: VCV is such a powerful system for creating all sorts of CV. Can I use your plug ins to do all of the mentioned above without having to control a DAW (Im using Logic)?

Thank you so much and Im looking forward to getting my ES-9

All the best,

ASH

But when calibrating the Buchla 259e with silent way, is there a way that the ES-9 outputs negative voltage?
By default the plug-in will sweep the full output voltage range of ±10V. You can use the Output Matrix in the Voice Controller to limit it to sweeping positive voltages.

Again, it's the Output Matrix.

You can do the calibration stuff with the VCV plug-in, yes.

Ok, cool

so everything is happening in the output matrix, got it! But about the calibration again: Where do I limit the outcoming voltages? Do I just set the offest for the 1st chanel (Pitch) all the way to +1?

Thanks for the reply!

You would set the offset to 0.5 and the scale to 0.5.

Cool, thanks!

Ill run the output through a kinks rectifier just in case i did something wrong. Dont wanna fry my oscillator!

Uh, so I found the Offset in the matrix,(first knob) which is easy, but where do i adjust the scale?

Also, what are the mix ratios (Gate and Trigger) for a Buchla Pulse in Ch 2?

Cheers

If you want to scale the pitch CV, you adjust the knob marked pitch. It will be the one at 1.0 in the first row by default.

I would imagine you want 0.5 trigger plus 0.5 gate.

Alright, so if I have everything right:
SW Output Matrix -
Output 1 = Pitch 0.5 and Offset 0.5
Output 2 = Gate 0.5 and Trigger 0.5

This gives me an offset 0 - 10V Pitch note signal and on channel 2 a Buchla style Pulse to drive the 281e

Do I have it right?
Thank you so much for your support and patience os!

Cheers

Sounds right. Do check it before you connect the hardware though.

Will do!
The ES-9 Shows the types of voltages on the panel, but what other way would you suggest checking the data? Perhaps the VCV scope?

Also, how would I dial in those settings with your VCV plug ins? (Pitch and Pulse)

Yes, putting the signal into an ES-9 input and using a scope would work.

In VCV you'll have to use other modules to scale the voice controller output and add offsets.

Awesome, thank you!

So I know Vult has a module called Leakage and Befaco has a Dual Attenuverter. Those should work!

Would i do the scaling of the Cv manually then by just listening to a keyboard with a VCV VCO as reference?

No, you could still use the Voice Controller calibration.

Oh, do you mean by using the CV input or the AC Encoder?

The silent Way in VCV doesnt have offset capabilities, does it? I thought it only has Calibrate in, CV in and CV out.
It would be cool if it had the same functions and features as the regular Silent sleeper plug in.

But you can scale and offset with other VCV modules, completely flexibly.

Oh, so you mean by using a Voltage processor? Yeah, that is what Leakage by vult does.

Awesome, that should work!

Very last question, how can i test my calibration Voltage output from the AU Silent Way Voice controller without using an Oscillator? Since it needs to be sidechained to "hear" the calibration, how do I simply check the MIN and MAX Voltage outputs of the Voice controller settings?

Cheers

If you don't connect a VCO it will still run through the calibration process.

Hi Os,

I just bought the VCV Voice controller, but i dont get it to spit out positive voltages only. The only way i can prevent it is by using the kinks rectifier that clips it at 0V, but then i wont get a proper tuning...
Im just really afraid to experiment with this kind of stuff since buchla modules are so expensive.
I watched this one video where a 261e is tuned via silent way, but he doesnt show any settings :bang:
Are there any more recources that i can read? There must be more people knowing about this situation

Use a combination of a constant voltage source and a mixer to offset the voltage into the positive range.

Ok, i just played around with it a bit and it seems that putting the Oscillator Knob all the way down to the lowest frequency seems to do the trick with the kinks rectifier
