Disting EX feature request

Post by LDT » Tue May 12, 2020 1:40 am

I don’t believe that there is such a thread. So now there is.

Here is an idea that I think could be implemented in EX, and would be frigging crazy awesome:
Just take a look at the Auto-sampling feature of the upcoming Bitbox Micro. You define note range, note length, sampling interval, (number of semitones between each sampling) and the number of velocity layers. And off course a midi channel. Then you press Start, and just lean back and wait for magic to be created.
In other words, you can dynamicly multi-sample anything you can connect to the midi output, all while skimming Muffwiggler and sipping coffee. So after it has recorded the last sample, boom, you have a new multisampled instrument in your modular rig.
I am pretty sure the Bitbox Micro will sell like hotcakes for this feature alone, but how about we had it in EX?
(BTW, the reason it is only the Micro and not the Bitbox 2, is that only the Micro has the crucial midi out for this operation.)

Hi Os,

Is a simple sample editor (for the new Wav recorder) in your plans for the EX - with that nice screen.. :)

You mean to trim the ends/set loop points?

Hi Os,

Would it be possible to show the waveform in the wavetable modes? That would be handy for the Wavetable Envelope / LFO modes.

Power up in the same algo as power off would be great, and something I miss from mk4. I know you could save a slot, and load that, but I’m a lazy f**ker, and it’s still not as good as instant ready, for live use.

Erm, how about chord CV from all four outputs?

You wouldn't need a gate because you would multi the gate going in.

Limited to just four notes but you could drop say the fifth for chords with five notes.

How about a quad VCO. Standard shapes, square pwm, saw etc, inputs take v/o and gate. Outputs could be quantised to key or scale, play chords, or output in a round robin fashion. With an envelope? Could probably be achieved by sampling in myself, lots of effort though.

Or a euclidian sample player. clock in, the outs can be set to different euclidean steps/lengths

Polyrhthmic sequencer ala the subharmonicon would be excellent too. Although i dont think there is a dedicated clock divdier, on there at the moment is there?

Fantastic module.

If i understand correctly i2c is currently setup to just control/map to continuous controller parameters, not to trigger notes (while midi can map to continuous control parameters AND trigger notes). If i2c was expanded to trigger notes it would open up a lot of possibilities, namely letting users control the disting via Teletype or Ansible modules. There’s already interest on the Lines forum in altering Ansible firmware to talk to the EX if note trigger i2c support gets added to the EX. Basically it would be really fun to play back polyphonic multisamples with a Grid!

I'm talking to one of the Teletype developers about adding the relevant commands.

Could you link me to the Lines forum thread?

With the 6 trigs algo could we please be able to use different folders per sample? Don't know about others, but my samples are divided in folder by Kicks/Snares/Claps etc, i usually don't want 6 claps... is that possible ? It would be enough to have Folder 1,2,3,4,5,6 hardcoded/synced to sample 1,2,3,4,5,6. Pwetty please.

Oh you may be one step ahead of me then. I don't have a teletype but if I understand correctly, once the teletype i2c pitch/gate commands are in place someone can use those to add functionality to other module's firmware (Monome Ansible in this case).

It's not a fleshed out discussion yet but here you go.

https://llllllll.co/t/ansible-developme ... /23118/325

I'm not sure if there's a codified method of receiving pitch/notelength type data over i2c but if you are looking for examples of modules that currently do this there's Whimsical Raps/Mannequins Just Friends, Orthogonal Devices ER-301, and BPC Music TELEXo. My only personal experience is with Ansible (as i2c leader) polyphonically sequencing Just friends over i2c. This functionality is present in Ansible 3.0 firmware onward.

This page might be of some use.

Thanks for looking into this. Love how much more user friendly the EX is and I'm excited to see what you can create with a much less restricted platform!

Not sure if this is a feature request...

I'm currently browsing through the wavetables on the EX and the wavetable name is truncated to eleven characters.

So for some wavetables you don't really know what you are getting. Might not seem to be much of an issue but I'm looking at some of the "sebastianism" wavetables and all I can see is the word "sebastianis" in the EX display, even when it is scrolling.

Any chance of increasing the number of characters that can be displayed? It would be much better than having to rename stuff on the card.

cheers

andy

+1 for this. I do miss the simplicity of the auto save

@synkrotron can do.

@wm.wragg I've added this for v1.2.

Thank you, much appreciated. This is one of the reasons I love your modules, you listen to feedback, and then act on it. Again thank you.
