Ideally I'd like to move towards the single color = single voice organisation, but as I've acquired a random pile of cables over the years I make do with whatever I have at hand.

I used to just patch with whatever I had laying around but it always felt pretty disorderly to me. After seeing Kim Bjorn speak at Moogfest I decided to give his method a try, which he laid out in Patch & Tweak. I can’t remember the reasons he laid out for each color in the book, but they are as follows:

Green = clocks
Red = triggers
Grey = cv/pitch
Blue = modulation
Yellow = audio
Black = output

My goal was to be able to walk up to a patch I've not used for a couple days, and immediately be able to look at one end of a cable and find the other end. I wanted a way for those connections to visually pop out at me. From previous experience I decided that the best way to do this was to have a color associated with a length.

I also knew that I would want to get some stackable cables, but mostly use non-stackables because of cost. Since the stackables have a fixed length/color relationship from the vendor, I went with those colors, even though my regular cables (from black market) come in a rainbow of colors for every length. So from my notes…

patch cord notes

for stack cables  https://www.perfectcircuitaudio.com
for black market http://www.musiciansfriend.com

stack cables black market modular cables

20 cm  green		green	5”	(12.7)
30 cm  red		red	10”	(25.4)
50 cm  yellow		yellow	20”	(50.8)
75 cm  blue    		blue	30”	(76.2)
150 cm purple  		purple	60”	(152.4)
