Best underrated module?

Post by Shledge » Mon Jun 26, 2017 12:47 pm

What is your best uncommon/underrated module?

Mine would have to be my patchblocks eurorack module - easy to program and really easy to make it a dual LFO/offset/lowfi VCA/sampler etc.

BLM Space Moth v3

This filter sounds great. It has a sub in, wave folder, FM w/atten, ping and attenuators for input, mod, and 1/4in TR in and out for processing external signals.

Meng Qi Voltage Memory. 7 banks of 6x12 stored voltages, plus a bunch of sequencer modes including arps and the super-useful Custom Sequencer mode.

From basic keyboard-ish style playing to full control over every aspect of a patch, it does so much.

I love the sound of Mutable Ripples even though a lot of people think it's boring.

*my* most underrated module is the Dopefer A-138m 4x4, but id count all matrix mixers too.
it is incredible in feedback patches, whether using audio or cv; its great to feed VC EGs into it and control the EGs and other things.
i can understand most folks might not want it in their system when its a single row case like i did, because feedback aint everyones thing, but in a big system?
being able to send 4 CVs in different levels to 4 VCOs, for instance, seems like itd be amazing -- have pitch in the top row, 2 different envelopes to go to 2 sync'ed oscs in different levels to get similar but different sync sweeps, and an lfo with adjustable vibrato per VCO?

Actually...

My FourMulator it's an LFO powerhouse though it's huge HP. Everything with this is some sort of combo.

Doepfer A-138e. Almost anything you could want in a CV processor x4.

I really get a lot of use and enjoyment out of the PGH Filter. I love the lack of hype around PGH in general. I'm a fan of all their old modules and continue to get a lot of mileage out of them.

Synthwerks FSR-1N. One of the first modules i bought and still got it (actually 2 of them). Very playable, for gates but especially pressure - quick modulations as well as smooth, slow transitions, through a slew to get long fade outs.

I think maybe the Synthrotek DLY. If you put the decay rate right at the extreme edge where it starts to "break up," you can get this amazing organic kind of glitchy delay sound that immediately adds a distinct texture to anything you feed through it. Hard to explain unless you own one - got it as a gift and was pleasantly surprised.

My favorite filter is the BL diode filter, I've got two versions and anytime they come up I will probably buy more :hihi:

I'm a fan of the Eowave Weather Drones. I like to keep it as my wildcard, semi-all-in-one module to get weird with. It was my first DIY kit as well.

same here
great module for the cost, love the fold / spread function
only cons is lack of cv on that two (thinking about hacking)

I'll have to go with my Omsonic Really Nice Filter (RNF). This thing is a beast, very classic Roland kind of sound (OTA). 2 channel mixer. 3 CV inputs (one is scaled V/oct). 4-, 2-pole and bandpass. Just a great sounding filter. Kind of an ugly panel (depending on your aesthetic preferences) but...it sounds so good you won't care. And it was like $100 brand new! Very underrated.

Well, it is the only module that you need to PM in order to get.

Doepfer 183-2 offset generator. I use it in nearly every patch.

Malekko Wiard Boogie Filter. Just speculating that it's underrated because it was never re-released with the Richter branding, unlike the other modules. Definitely wasn't the same kind of success as the Borgs. I can imagine why... it's difficult to tame and not very "general purpose". But I like it.

Everyone has a different choice for underrated, it's sort of a testament to the possibilities of modules available these days.

L-1 Modules in general.
Some of them are really amazing (Quad vc resonant, dual ADSR, Tube Vca, Quad Vca) and very good build quality (Cwejman quality).

Offsets in general are often overlooked. Really useful modules.

WMD Invert Offset. I dont think they even make this humble thing anymore, but it's so useful to have an offset, inverter and stuff.

And Doepfer anything.
