Volca Modular - I got one (review / compare with Easel).

Anything modular synth related that is not format specific.

Good thought about modding it, not sure I have the ambition.
I am my own source of uncertainty.

I backed the Vixen Mixer on Kickstarter... I backed it mostly because of the effects sends and the power hub. (oh and the fact the size is the same as a Volca so when I finally get around to getting stands, they will work).

I thought it pretty cheap for its flexibility...

@kinkujin - well from the time they said they started shipping to when I got it was maybe 4-6 weeks. They were building them in batches. By now they may have that down to a smooth flow with their manufacturer. I don't know. So I wouldn't use my example as what to expect.

Hey question to the group - so is the Volca Modular shipping yet? What about the Volca Drum?

Thanks @pmboos.

As far as Modular shipping, yes, they are all over (in u.s. at least).

No idea about Volca Drum. I'm hoping to not want it.. . . .

If the Volca Modular did not open the door to other manufacturers to create a better quality instrument than the VM that still costs much less than an Easel ....then I don't know what will

Yeah, i'm hopeful that it will usher in a new, interesting direction that is more affordable to poor slobs like me.

It is interesting to me that Korg produced such an extreme instrument. It is pretty much a pure West Coast synth, even more so than the 0-coast in many ways. So far I find it surprisingly grayscale..I mean it has just the basic foldable triangle and those resulting waveforms, and the triangle modulator wave. The function generators seem to have limited range, the dual lpg is a far cry from the make noise optomix. Overall, so far, I haven't created a great variety of timbres. But the ones I've found are amazing and I find the VM is a super expressive instrument with some very human-like sound qualities, if that makes any sense. I need to learn more about the sequencer and I am really liking the motion recording and microtuning too.
If this were to start a different direction in affordable synths that'd be cool, but so far so much of that market has tapped into little sounds of yesteryear boxes that it is hard to believe the VM will start a craze for an esoteric style like West Coast synths that almost no one knows about. Maybe more likely, and not a bad thing, other manufacturers will add more buchla-like capability to synths that can also cover more conventional ground. Personally I like that this korg volca modular is so uncompromising in it's design and I think Korg is just an awesome crazy company.

Waiting on the second one I ordered..

Me and a friend just ordered one VM for each. I don't need one at all, but it'll be fun to have in the office.

Has anyone got their modular to play close to concert pitch with
a CV keyboard controlling it?

Thanks

I'm loving this little guy! I have all the functionality (and more) in Eurorack (which admittedly sounds better to my ears) but the portability in combination with the constraints definitely fuels my creativity.

I did a comparison between the Volca Modular and my Eurorack setup (mainly Make Noise) and posted it on Instagram:

https://www.instagram.com/p/Buo_WGblUM1 ... hare_sheet

- Korg Volca Modular through its own reverb (Space reverb)
- Eurorack Modular (mostly Make Noise) through the Space reverb
- Korg Volca Modular through Erbe-Verb
- Eurorack Modular through Erbe-Verb

From playing with the Volca Modular I've noticed that on start-up OSC1 (weirdly not OSC2) is pitched lower than the lowest note you can play with the keyboard.

A tip: if you want a clock signal, patch the sync-out to the CV-in. Voila!

Over 2 months since NAMM and all the vendors I checked here in Canada
say "COMING SOON". I have heard of a few coming in in Toronto,
but unless I order from the U.S. (which even has a stock problem)
-I am still without.

Another tip: if you change the tempo range to 10-600bpm and run the sequencer at 10bpm, you have a lot of control over the automation of knobs. Speed up to your desired speed and enjoy the crazy automation jumps!

moved post to general gear..not really sure of category where Volca Modular fits in!
Especially 2 of them. I wonder systems like these and some Bastl things like Kastle, or the AE modulars, that use breadboard wire patching, would be considered a modular format of sorts although not electrically compatible?
I am my own source of uncertainty.

Absolutely worth the price of admission. I got it a week ago. Little FM monster. VERY surprised by the sound quality. Much lower sound floor than previous Volcas. The sequence is actually pretty nice given the price point. Love the stochastic mode.

I've got 400+hp of gear, and this will get used. LOVE the FM drones.

Well worth $200.

Here are three tracks, where Volca Modular is playing somewhat different parts and combined with Erica synths stuff and DrumBrute Impact in one instance.

Haven't played with mine in a bit. I need to get an adapter, this stuff eats batteries like crazy.

But, here's a couple more improvisations on the Volca Modular. Effects added (two Zoom CDR70s)

https://soundcloud.com/branko-vranic/the-unman

Two volcas synced and cross modulated. I pretty much hit play and let the Volcas do their thing here.

https://soundcloud.com/branko-vranic/arturos-song

Two volcas synced, with a couple extra tracks added after, towards the end. Really dig how the Volca gets those plucky sounds.

I also need to keep track of my patches.
